Registration is now open for the event, which will be webstreamed for registrants. The event is sponsored by the Career Development and Engagement Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Howell is a national leader and advocate for faculty development, diversity, and flexible career paths. She developed standardized family-friendly leave policies that were eventually adopted across the University of California system.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes there is a latent or unconscious fear that creeps in when we talk about career flexibility,&#8221; said Linda Love, Ed.D., director of faculty development and co-director of the UNMC iLEAD program. &#8220;Flexibility in the workplace is not aimed at working less, but rather how productivity can be maximized in a way that&#8217;s optimal for individual and business needs.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b>See Dr. Howell&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/facdev\/_documents\/events\/Howell-Lydia-Bio.pdf\">recent publications<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Howell has a strong interest in academic workforce issues and was co-PI of a recently concluded $1.27 million National Institutes of Health grant studying the effect of family-friendly policies on women&#8217;s careers in biomedical science. She also served as an advisor to the American Council on Education (ACE) on faculty career flexibility, and received an Innovation Award from ACE and the Sloan Foundation to develop programs that address a range of topics from unconscious biases to use of flexibility options in academic medicine. Dr. Howell has published many journal articles on topics related to faculty development and flexible careers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In order to successfully lead a global health care workforce, we need to embrace workplace flexibility as a means to enhance individual career growth and a sense of purpose,&#8221;
