UNMC’s P.J. Schenarts, M.D., is honored by Association for Surgical Education<\/b>
\nDuring Surgical Education Week in May, UNMC’s P.J. Schenarts, M.D., professor of surgery, was awarded the Association for Surgical Education’s Distinguished Educator Award. Dr. Schenarts also recently completed his presidential year for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery.<\/p>\n

Dr. Schenart’s wife, Kim Schenarts, Ph.D., professor of surgery and vice chair for student education in the department, was a 2015 recipient of the award, and her father, Richard Dean, M.D., received the award in 2001.<\/p>\n

The award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated excellence as a master educator. In addition to recognized skills as an excellent teacher, nominees need to demonstrate scholarship and significant contributions to surgical education.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ganti to be one of featured speakers at upcoming summit in Kansas City<\/b>
\nApar Ganti, M.D., professor of internal medicine, division of oncology\/ hematology, will be one of the 11 featured speakers at the “State of the Science Summit” for the 2018 Annual Oncology Meeting for OncLive\u00ae, the leading digital provider of resources and information to oncology professionals. The meeting will be held on June 30 at the Marriott Downtown Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. <\/p>\n

State of the Science Summit” is a premier conference series that features medical experts from across the nation. Each summit integrates academic and community-based physicians and health care professionals from key disciplines that range from medical and surgical oncology to hematology, all aiming to discuss current treatment options. <\/p>\n

Discussion topics for the speakers will include integrating immunotherapy and targeted therapy in advanced kidney cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia, and neuroendocrine tumors.<\/p>\n

Retirements announced<\/b>
\nThe UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of 12 retirements spanning the period between May 16 and Sept. 5. Seven of the retirees have more than 30 years of service with three exceeding 40 years of service. Myron Pudwill, D.D.S., College of Dentistry, is the senior member of the retiree group with more than 51 years of service.<\/p>\n

In addition to Dr. Pudwill, six others are longtime faculty members — Margaret (Anne) Kessinger, M.D. (46 years), Daniel Schafer, M.D. (37 years), Paul Larsen, M.D. (20 years), Charles Krobot, Pharm.D. (15 years), Van Sanderfer, D.D.S. (13 years) and Paul Hansen, D.D.S. (11 years).<\/p>\n
