{"id":62758,"date":"2018-08-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/08\/27\/matlab-software-to-aid-researchers-with-technical-computing\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:22:06","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:22:06","slug":"matlab-software-to-aid-researchers-with-technical-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/08\/27\/matlab-software-to-aid-researchers-with-technical-computing\/","title":{"rendered":"MATLAB software to aid researchers with technical computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>UNMC faculty, students and staff can now use Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB), a high-performance application for technical computing, through the Research Information Technology Office (RITO).<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout-right\">\n<h3>Helpful resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/matlabcentral\/answers\/help\">MATLAB answers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/videos\/getting-started-with-matlab-68985.html?s_tid=main_tutorial_ML_rp%20%20\">Getting started with MATLAB<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mathworks.com\/store\/link\/faq?w.mathworks.com&amp;nocookie=true\">FAQ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>MATLAB integrates computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation. <\/p>\n<p>Aside from mathematical analysis, MATLAB can also be used to build full-fledged applications that may have their own graphical user interface. MATLAB has been used in a wide variety of research areas and other fields. <\/p>\n<p>From a biomedical research perspective, MATLAB has been used to build<br \/>\nmathematical models of biological processes (to elucidate properties of dynamic systems such as cell cycle, apoptosis, chemotaxis, and so one) that can be deterministic or stochastic, continuous or discrete. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, MATLAB can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>solve these problems numerically (e.g., ordinary or partial differential equations);<\/li>\n<li>estimate or optimize parameters;<\/li>\n<li>fit simulations to experimental data;<\/li>\n<li>visualize data\/simulations in 2D\/3D;<\/li>\n<li>perform basic statistical analysis of data; and<\/li>\n<li>generate publication-quality plots, even for data that has been generated by other software.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users can run MATLAB on Apple macOS, Linux and Microsoft Windows, and there is no limit to the number of devices that can be used. details. <\/p>\n<p>All members of the UNMC community who have a unmc.edu email address are eligible to use the software at no cost &#8212; RITO is providing funding for the licensing for this financial year and is exploring longer-term licensing and possibly adding Nebraska Medicine as approved users in the future. <\/p>\n<p>Support is provided by the vendor, MathWorks, at the <a
