{"id":62804,"date":"2018-08-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/08\/27\/event-to-explore-visual-arts-impact-on-critical-thinking\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:22:27","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:22:27","slug":"event-to-explore-visual-arts-impact-on-critical-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/08\/27\/event-to-explore-visual-arts-impact-on-critical-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Event to explore visual arts&#8217; impact on critical thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The Healing Arts Program is hosting a free workshop for UNMC students at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Yanney Conference Center at the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"400\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Roger0827.jpg\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\" alt=\"picture disc.\"><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:0.85em;line-height:150%\">&#8220;Roger,&#8221; oil on canvas, by Mark Gilbert, Ph.D., 2007<\/span><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE>Mark Gilbert, Ph.D., will hold an interactive workshop &#8212; &#8220;How the Visual Arts Can Foster Critical Thinking in Medicine&#8221; &#8212; that will engage attendees in the interpretation of fine art images and group discussion to illustrate how the visual arts can be used to foster critical thinking from a clinical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The event will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Describe the benefits of team based versus individual problem solving.\n<li>Explain how the (visual) arts and humanities can be used to foster critical thinking.\n<li>Develop examples of critical thinking in the participant&#8217;s own setting.<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. Gilbert, a UNMC alum, has worked on a number of high profile art-based research projects using portraiture to illuminate patient and caregiver experience of illness, recovery and care. These studies include &#8220;Saving Faces&#8221; at The Royal London Hospitals and &#8220;Portraits of Care&#8221; at UNMC. <\/p>\n<p>The resultant exhibitions have been exhibited widely in venues across Europe and the U.S., including &#8220;Saving Faces&#8221;
