Cathleen Peterson-Layne, M.D., Ph.D., and division chief of obstetric anesthesiology, was inducted into the Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE) at a ceremony Thursday, September 13, in Clarkson Tower.
\n 
\nThe IAE is a UNMC-wide group in which educators from varying colleges and departments gather regularly to use their diverse skillset to enhance education on campus.
\n 
\n"The ability to influence the future by teaching others is what initially attracted me to an academic practice," said Dr. Peterson-Layne. "What has held my interest is my personal ongoing lifelong learning, plus the opportunity to assist others – trainees and trainers – along their paths."
\n 
\nDr. Peterson-Layne, who came to the department from Duke University in December 2016, was previously an inaugural member of a similar organization called Duke AHEAD. Her goal as a member in the IAE is to contribute to the development of other faculty by serving as a mentor, and peer coach for teaching activities. Additionally, she hopes to develop meaningful assessment and evaluation tools for both learners and educators.
\n 
\nDr. Peterson-Layne first learned of the IAE from Vice Chair Andrew Patterson, M.D., Ph.D., who was an inaugural member and assisted with the creation of the academy.
\n 
\n"The more you collaborate in groups, you find that there are people with skillsets here that are invaluable, and to be exposed to them is a great opportunity," said Dr. Patterson.
\n 
\nThe mission of the IAE is to foster a vibrant interprofessional community of educators through faculty development programs, educational scholarship, and the development of innovative curricula. The vision of the academy is that UNMC and Nebraska Medicine be learner-centered.
\n 
\nThe academy is service-oriented, and members are expected to engage with other educators at UNMC and provide expert opinion when needed. They enjoy benefits such as access to a diverse network of educators, eligibility for a $7,500 internal academy grant, access to lists of conference presentation and grant opportunities, and more.
\n 
\nWith Dr. Peterson-Layne’s induction, the Department of Anesthesiology has seven members in the roughly 100-member academy.
\n 
\n"The idea is that the more we can get people in our department to be involved, the more we can participate in the transformative initiative in the institution," said Dr. Patterson.
