{"id":63141,"date":"2018-10-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/10\/12\/unmc-for-the-record-389\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T15:54:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:54:57","slug":"unmc-for-the-record-389","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/10\/12\/unmc-for-the-record-389\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC for the record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b>Chief Evans meets with campus community<\/b><br \/>\nCharlotte Evans, new interim chief of police\/director of campus security and public safety for UNMC, UNO and Nebraska Medical Center, met with members of the med center community  on Oct. 3 at &#8220;Coffee with a Cop.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The event allowed members of the campus community to stop by for a quick meet-and-greet with Evans, who took over in her interim role in August.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Kang wins Nebraska Book Award for novel &#8216;The November Girl&#8217;<\/b><br \/>\nLydia Kang, M.D., assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, was awarded a 2018 Nebraska Book Award for her young-adult fiction novel, &#8220;The November Girl.&#8221; The Nebraska Center for the Book will hold an awards ceremony on Dec. 1 at the History Nebraska&#8217;s Nebraska History Museum, 131 Centennial Mall North, in downtown Lincoln. Dr. Kang and other winners of the 2018 Nebraska Book Awards will be honored. The celebration will include readings by some of the winning authors, designers and illustrators of the books, which were all published in 2017 and have a Nebraska connection.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Michaelis will serve on Board of Medicine and Surgery for Nebraska<\/b><br \/>\nMaria Michaelis, M.D., was recently appointed by the Nebraska State Board of Health to serve on the Board of Medicine and Surgery as a medical school faculty member.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michaelis will replace Carl Smith, M.D., professor and chairman of UNMC&#8217;s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who served the previous five-year term. Dr. Michaelis&#8217; first term begins Dec. 1, 2018, and will expire in 2023, at which point she can reapply for a second term.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Medicine and Surgery, under the governance of the Nebraska State Board of Health, advises on issues such as physician licensure, insurance, and public safety. The board meets every other month. There are 29 other boards or committees nestled under the Nebraska State Board of Health, representing various aspects of health care.<\/p>\n<p>There are eight members of the Board of Medicine and Surgery: two medical school faculty members, one osteopathic physician member, three physician members, and two public members. All are appointed by the Nebraska State Board of Health, which is comprised of 17 members appointed by the governor and legislature.<\/p>\n<p><b>Med center to host visiting chef from Norway<\/b><br \/>\nOn Oct. 22, the Nebraska and Clarkson Cafes will host Sodexo&#8217;s Grethe Olsen, a visiting chef from Norway, who will prepare and serve foods from her native country from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Clarkson\/Nebraska Cafes. Olsen studied hotel and restaurant management and launched her career as a chef at the Sj\u00f8ormen Inn and Seljord Hotell in the culture-rich village of Seijord. She&#8217;s been with Sodexo for eight years as a site manager and chef, focusing on quality menus and service for all guests.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\"
