Scott Neumeister, M.D., has been awarded The Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator by the American College of Physicians (ACP), a national organization of internists. Dr. Neumeister is an associate professor of internal medicine at UNMC. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the ACP has a membership of over 150,000 people, their national awards are very competitive,&#8221; said Tom Tape, M.D., professor and chair division of general medicine. &#8220;And this is the only award bestowed by the ACP that specifically recognizes excellence in student teaching.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During their internal medicine clinical clerkship, medical students participate in a daily class taught by Dr. Neumeister and his colleagues using a highly interactive approach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The in-depth, personalized learning experience constitutes an invaluable experience for students in the clinical years,&#8221; Dr. Tape said. &#8220;It goes considerably beyond the normal clinical learning environment experiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allison Ashford, M.D., assistant professor division of general medicine, said Dr. Neumeister&#8217;s classes were significant for her education. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Scott challenged me to critically think. He probed me to continue to ask &#8216;why?'&#8221; she said. &#8220;His approach of allowing me to actively learn while passively guiding me along the way inspired me to become an internist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The award will be presented at ACP&#8217;s annual convocation ceremony on April 11, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in Philadelphia, where ACP will be hosting its annual scientific conference, &#8220;Internal Medicine 2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The award, established by ACP&#8217;s Board of Regents in 2003, honors the late Dr. Waxman, who served the ACP as senior vice president for medical knowledge and education. The award recognizes an ACP member, who is an internal medicine group leader, clinical clerkship director, program director, or faculty member, and who spends a significant amount of time teaching medical students.<\/p>\n<p>Since he joined the faculty in 1998, Dr. Neumeister has devoted more hours annually to medical student teaching than any other faculty member, according to his nominator. Dr. Neumeister&#8217;s small-group Socratic teaching sessions hone clinical reasoning skills and foster lifelong independent learning habits. His teaching excellence has been recognized with numerous university accolades as well as a Nebraska ACP Chapter teaching award. <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Neumeister is an active ACP member who presents a variety of topics at Nebraska Chapter meetings as well as being a guest speaker for other chapters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.
