Norfolk nursing students donate school supplies<\/b>
\nNursing students from the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk recently assembled book bags filled with school supplies to be donated to the Orphan Grain Train. The nonprofit organization donates clothing, medical supplies, food, literature, and other aid to meet needs for people in the U.S. and around the world. Funding for the bags was provided by Thrivent Financial.<\/p>\n

McGoogan Library’s Helms honored by the MCMLA<\/b>
\nMary Helms, associate professor in the McGoogan Library of Medicine,
\nwas given the Midcontinental Chapter of the Medical Library
\nAssociation Outstanding Achievement Award during the organization’s annual meeting in October.<\/p>\n

Helms received the award for service to the organization.<\/p>\n

MCMLA is a chapter of the Medical Library Association (MLA), a professional organization of individuals and institutions in the health sciences library field.<\/p>\n

MCMLA provides an opportunity for discussion of regional and local interests and for continuing education in health sciences librarianship.<\/p>\n

Kearney BSN students take part in Franklin County Health Fair<\/b>
\nThe UNMC Accelerated BSN students from the Kearney Campus participated in the Franklin County Health Fair in October as part of their population health clinicals. Under the guidance of Stephanie Burge, the students gave a presentation called the “Fact and Myth Game” and reviewed area resources for suicide prevention. The topic of suicide prevention was part of Burge’s quality improvement project while obtaining her Doctor of Nursing Practice. Franklin and Webster counties have a higher suicide rate (16 percent) compared to the rest of the state (10 percent) and was the impetus for her project.<\/p>\n

College of Public Health’s emergency management program recognized<\/b>
\nThe UNMC College of Public Health’s online Master of Emergency Management program was ranked No. 27 overall in the mastersprogramsguide.com<\/a>. The guide recently published a ranking of 50 exceptional online degree programs. <\/p>\n

The Master’s Programs Guide rankings are designed to help students find the best master’s degree programs to meet their goals. Schools and programs were evaluated based on a methodology using publicly available information. <\/p>\n

Retirements announced<\/b>

\nThe UNMC Department of Human Resources has released a list of six retirements spanning the period between Sept. 28 and Dec. 16. Two of the retirees have more than 30 years of service with four exceeding 25 years of service. Leading the way with 39 years of service was Timothy Hallberg, College of Medicine-pediatrics pulmonology. He is followed by Judy Olsen, College of Dentistry-Lincoln Clinic Administration, with 30 years of service. <\/p>\n
