Peter Pellegrino, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded as runner up for his oral presentation during the inaugural Graduate Medical Research Symposium at the Truhlsen Events Center on Oct. 17.
\n 
\nMore than 125 house officers, faculty, Graduate Medical Education staff, educators and researchers from various colleges attended the event. There were 75 poster and oral presentations from nearly 70 residents on topics including clinical outcomes, basic science, education, business, health policy and humanities.
\n 
\nDr. Pellegrino’s oral presentation, titled “Renal sympathetic vasomotion monitoring as a novel method for intraprocedural feedback for renal denervation,” showcased research on a procedure that can aid in reducing high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for death and cardiovascular disease. The research examines a technology that can index the effectiveness of a renal denervation procedure, which severs the brain-kidney connection and lowers blood pressure.
\n 
\n“First and foremost, I want to emphasize that the award was given for the work to which I made small contributions,” said Dr. Pellegrino. “My collaborators deserve much of the credit. It’s always a great pleasure to present our work, and I’m thankful for the opportunity provided by the GME office.”
\n 
\nCollaborators on the awarded research are Alicia M. Schiller, Ph.D., and Hanjun Wang, M.D. in the Department of Anesthesiology, and Yiannis S. Chatzizisis, M.D., Ph.D., in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Dr. Pellegrino’s mentor, Dr. Irving H. Zucker, Ph.D. in the Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology. Dr. Pellegrino also credits funding from the Nebraska Research Initiative, as well as Kaye Talbitzer and Tara Rudebush in Dr. Zucker's laboratory, and John Lof, Liz Stolze, and Gretchen Fry in the Joint Cardiovascular Research Lab.

\n“I’m proud of the recognition earned by Drs. Pellegrino, Schiller and Wang,” said Department Chair Steven J. Lisco, M.D. “Their dedication to research and patient care echoes the mission of our department. We are fortunate to have them at this institution.”
