{"id":63498,"date":"2018-11-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/11\/20\/livegreen-a-happier-healthier-holiday-season\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:15:05","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:15:05","slug":"livegreen-a-happier-healthier-holiday-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2018\/11\/20\/livegreen-a-happier-healthier-holiday-season\/","title":{"rendered":"LiveGreen: A happier, healthier holiday season"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Every year, holiday consumption causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/region9\/waste\/recycling\/\">waste to increase by 25 percent<\/a> (1 million tons a week more to landfills) between Thanksgiving and New Year&#8217;s Day. That&#8217;s not really surprising when you consider all the shopping, eating, and traveling.<\/p>\n<p>Seemingly little actions add up, though, and there are lots of things you can do to reduce your waste and have a happier, healthier holiday season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce the focus on gifts and concentrate on the things that really matter, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/healthy-sustainable-holidays\/\">your sanity<\/a>.\n<li>If you exchange gifts, consider buying experiences, such as a museum or zoo membership, or make donations instead of buying things. If you do buy gifts, look for locally made items.\n<li>Consolidate your shopping trips to save gas. Take reusable bags. Consolidate online shopping to save on shipping. Look for products that contain recycled content and responsibly sourced materials.\n<li>Wrap gifts in reused materials. If every American household wrapped three gifts in reused materials (brown paper, maps, Sunday comics, cloth bags, cereal boxes), enough paper would be saved to cover 45,000 football fields. For everything else, use recycled content paper and reusable gift bags, boxes and bows.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrapcentralrecycling.com\/light-drive.html\">Recycle old lights<\/a> to help local groups and replace them with new, efficient, LED lights, which use <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.epa.gov\/2015\/12\/22\/staying-green-for-the-holidays\/\">70 percent less energy<\/a>.\n<li>Hosting? Buy food in bulk to reduce packaging waste, but menu plan to reduce food waste, and serve with reusable plates\/cups\/utensils\/napkins.\n<li>Make it easy for guests to recycle, and recycle everything you can&#8217;t reuse.\n<li>Consider sending e-cards, which saves trees, your time and money.  Recycle or reuse any cards you receive for decoration, future gift tags or craft projects.\n<li>If batteries are needed, buy rechargeable. They&#8217;ll save you money and trips to the store in the long run. Recycle single-use batteries.\n<li>Check your thermostat. More people and more cooking means the temperature can be lowered.  Every 2 degrees lower saves $100 a year or the equivalent carbon emissions as driving a car 3,000 miles, and people get to be comfortable in their (reused) ugly Christmas sweaters.\n<li>Reduce junk mail by contacting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalogchoice.org\/\">Catalog Choice<\/a> to remove your name from marketers&#8217; databases.\n<li>Instead of a cut tree, buy a live tree to decorate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.growingagreenerworld.com\/live-christmas-trees\/\">can be planted in your yard<\/a> once the holiday season is over. Dig the hole now, before the ground freezes.\n<li>If you buy a cut tree, leave it in your yard for birds during the winter and then compost, or take it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wasteline.org\/special-waste-information\/christmas-tree-disposal\/\">city&#8217;s recycling sites<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"aC w ZNGjTmxKF HYqaDyW h\"><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The holiday season is right around the corner.
