{"id":63881,"date":"2019-01-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/01\/14\/university-of-nebraska-partners-with-dept-of-defense-to-develop-drug-therapies\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T15:59:26","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:59:26","slug":"university-of-nebraska-partners-with-dept-of-defense-to-develop-drug-therapies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/01\/14\/university-of-nebraska-partners-with-dept-of-defense-to-develop-drug-therapies\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Nebraska partners with Dept. of Defense to develop drug therapies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><div><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has turned to the University of Nebraska to jumpstart the <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">development of drug therapies to protect military service members from the effects of radiation <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">exposure.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">In an environment where for-profit pharmaceutical companies are often reluctant to embark upon <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">financially risky drug discovery efforts, the unique four-pronged partnership established by the university <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">and the DOD could shorten the U.S. military&rsquo;s wait for drugs that prevent and counteract the effects of <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">radiation exposure.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;It&rsquo;s an exciting collaboration among the federal government, our state university and two of its premier <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">research campuses, UNMC and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and consultants from private <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">pharma who are Nebraska alumni,&quot; said David Berkowitz, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at UNL.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">This team operates under the auspices of the NU National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI), one of <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">13 University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC) supported by the DOD. Nebraska has the lone UARC <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">entrusted by the military to work on chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;This research represents the broad capacity of the University of Nebraska and its alumni consultants to <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">tackle potentially hazardous radiation exposures around the world,&quot; said Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Robert Hinson, <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">NSRI&rsquo;s founding executive director.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">The NU project for the Defense Health Agency (DHA), and in collaboration with Armed Forces <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI), has reached a second increment &#8211; potentially awarding nearly <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">$11 million in federal funding over the next five years. NU researchers will look for therapeutics <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">candidates the U.S. military would need to protect troops from radiation in case of exposure, as in a <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">nuclear accident or a nuclear weapons incident.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">Leveraging the full, collaborative strength of a united university system &#8211; multiple campuses, a network <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">of successful alums &#8211; directed by the DOD, is something new for NU.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;I&rsquo;ve never been involved with anything like that before,&quot; Dr. Berkowitz said. &quot;This team came together as <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">a joint vision between the team leadership and our DOD funders and it&rsquo;s pretty unusual across the <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">country to see such a public-private-government partnership.&quot;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">In fact, the university hopes this opens the door to continued partnership with private pharma in the <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">longer term, through identifying and developing therapeutic candidates that have dual-purposing <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">potential, Dr. Berkowitz said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">Dr. Berkowitz is co-primary investigator of the project, with Ken Bayles, Ph.D., professor of pathology <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">and microbiology at UNMC.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">Dr. Bayles said if private pharmaceutical companies are leaving a gap, the University of Nebraska is <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">eager to step in.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;We&rsquo;ve pitched this concept to develop a virtual pharmaceutical company, a drug development pipeline<\/span> <span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">that would coordinate the activities of all the expertise we have across all of our campuses and develop <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">capabilities to move molecules forward for drug development,&quot; he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">Handfuls of NU&rsquo;s top scientists will work on medicinal chemistry, metabolomics and bioinformatics in <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">order to move potential drug candidates toward clinical trials. &quot;We&rsquo;ll be coordinating all of these aspects <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">like a pharmaceutical company does,&quot; Dr. Bayles said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;If we do it right, this pipeline concept is an opportunity to build the economy in Nebraska, build the <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">pharmaceutical industry in Nebraska,&quot; Dr. Bayles said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;It&rsquo;s a complex machine,&quot; Dr. Berkowitz said of the new multi-pronged, multi-campus team. &quot;And it&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">working pretty well now.&quot;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">&quot;We are extremely proud to be affiliated with this research and the impact it can have for the Department <\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(51, 51, 51)\">of Defense, Defense Health Agency and other agencies as well,&quot; Lt.
