A total of 144 faculty members, celebrating service milestones of either 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 or five years<\/a>, will be recognized during the Annual Faculty Meeting on April 23 at 3 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. <\/p>\n

Below, three longtime colleagues share their favorite UNMC memories.<\/p>\n

David Shaw, Ph.D., professor and chairperson, oral biology, College of Dentistry — 50 years<\/b>
\nWhen my father learned that I had accepted my first faculty position at the University of Nebraska, his advice was simply to approach the job as if I was planning to stay there forever. I am sure he was not thinking that I would take his advice literally as I complete my 50th year at the College of Dentistry. <\/p>\n

My most rewarding experiences at the College of Dentistry have revolved around the relationships I have with my colleagues and dedicated, talented office staff. All are deeply committed to the teaching, research and service missions of the department. This has been paramount in supporting my longevity at the COD. I have always enjoyed classroom teaching and the interactions with students. As a computer-novice, adopting the pedagogical and technical advances in education has been a challenge, but also very rewarding. I am inspired by the growth in research activity and funding at the COD considering the teaching responsibilities of our faculty. I have had the pleasure to work under five deans and each has provided me with opportunities to maximize my abilities and utilize what talents I have been given. <\/p>\n

In my 50th year, I still look forward to coming to the College of Dentistry each day and contributing in some way to fulfilling the missions of the university and the College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n

Peggy Pelish, Ph.D., associate professor and pediatric nurse practitioner, UNMC College of Nursing — 40 years <\/b>
\nMy most rewarding experiences at UNMC have been watching the change in students as they experience their own personal growth in learning all aspects of their future roles as a nurse and a pediatric nurse practitioner. One of my annual favorite memories is attending the graduation events. The happiness of the graduates and their families on that day is a joy to behold.<\/p>\n

\nMy most rewarding experience at UNMC has been the privilege and opportunity to interact with and teach pathology residents, medical and cytology students. <\/p>\n

While serving as a core director during the restructuring of the curriculum in the mid 1990s a second year student stopped me in the hallway. <\/p>\n

“Dr. Radio, I just wanted to tell how much your lectures helped me prepare for the boards I just completed. Honestly, I didn’t realize a few months ago how important that information would be, but it sure helped me now.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
