Virginia Miller, a nurse and director of the West Nebraska School of Nursing in Scottsbluff from 1954 to 1986, passed away last month at age 98. <\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>She was involved in the transition process when the school became the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division. A strong supporter of nursing education in the west Nebraska area, many UNMC nursing students have benefited from the Virginia Miller Scholarship.<\/p>\n

Susan Wilhelm, Ph.D., assistant professor and former dean of the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, said Miller was director of the West Nebraska School of Nursing program when she became a faculty member.<\/p>\n

“She was very supportive of all the faculty,” Dr. Wilhelm said. “She faced any obstacle and challenge with a positive attitude. She always had a calm demeanor. She had high standards and trusted us to deliver a quality education to the nursing students. She was instrumental in transitioning the diploma program to the BSN program along with Dr. Rosalee Yeaworth.”<\/p>\n

Kim Rodehorst-Weber said Miller and colleagues were instrumental in establishing clinical sites to provide training opportunities for students.<\/p>\n

In 1984, Miller received UNMC’s J.G Elliott Award. She was the first woman to receive the award. In 1988, the Scottsbluff Gering Chamber of Commerce awarded her the Trail Blazer Award. The award is presented to an outstanding leader in the business community.<\/p>\n
