{"id":65751,"date":"2019-08-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/08\/22\/retirement-tea-aug-29-for-carin-borg\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:35:27","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:35:27","slug":"retirement-tea-aug-29-for-carin-borg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/08\/22\/retirement-tea-aug-29-for-carin-borg\/","title":{"rendered":"Retirement tea Aug. 29 for Carin Borg"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The UNMC Department of Surgery will host a retirement tea for administrator Carin Borg on Aug. 29 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the University Tower Private Dining Rooms A and B.<\/p>\n<p>Borg has held many positions during her 43 years of service to UNMC and more than 26 years in the department, as Jon Thompson, M.D., professor and chief of general surgery, noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have had the privilege of working with Carin for more than 30 years in various capacities, as a nurse, clinic manager, operating room manager, and for the past 26 years as the UNMC Department of Surgery administrator,&#8221; Dr. Thompson said. &#8220;She has worked tirelessly and effectively for our organizations, always in a fair and thoughtful manner, doing the right thing, and treating people with respect. We are all going to miss her dedication, attention to detail, sense of humor and institutional memory as she heads into a well-deserved retirement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Borg came to the medical center as a registered nurse in 1976, working at 6-West in University Hospital. She became administrative director of the UNMC Department of Surgery in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had the privilege to work alongside Carin for the last 10 years,&#8221; said David W. Mercer, M.D., McLaughlin Professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Surgery. &#8220;She was a godsend on my arrival here back in 2009 and clearly helped me learn the Nebraska way. Nobody ever worked harder or asked tougher questions of me. It was always what&#8217;s best for our patients and the organization.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the last 10 years, we have seen a significant increase in our faculty, clinical productivity, NIH grants, and educational programs (increasing general surgery from four to six, and adding programs in thoracic, vascular and pediatric surgery), due in no small part to her leadership and support for the department. I am forever indebted to her and wish her and Randy nothing but the best,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Borg said that she was fortunate to be part of the department and to work at UNMC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During my career at UNMC, it has been an honor and privilege to work with some of the finest leaders, physicians, residents, administrators and staff that one can ask for,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The growth and success of the department and University has been phenomenal and a result of tremendous vision and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My success in the department of surgery is due in large part to my physician co-leaders and our administrative team. When you get a talented, enthusiastic and coachable team together, you can do just about anything.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The campus is invited to attend the
