{"id":65907,"date":"2019-09-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/09\/17\/mmi-for-the-record-17\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T16:12:20","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T21:12:20","slug":"mmi-for-the-record-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/09\/17\/mmi-for-the-record-17\/","title":{"rendered":"MMI for the record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b>MMI Department of Recreational Therapy holds art sale<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Artwork produced through programming in the Munroe-Meyer Institute Department of Recreational Therapy was available for purchase at an art sale held by the department on Aug. 27-28.<\/p>\n<p>Coasters, dreamcatchers, planters and candle holders were among the decorated pieces available.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork was produced by youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Autism Social Club for young adults;\n<li>Adult Evening Respite and Habilitation Program;\n<li>Afterschool Youth Program;\n<li>Saturday Morning Youth Program;\n<li>Leisure Explorers Club, an adult day program;\n<li>Urban Adventure Program, an adult community outing program;\n<li>Girl&#8217;s Group, a teen program;\n<li>Arnold Stern Program for teens; and\n<li>Project SCORE, the Westside High School transition program for young adults.<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always exciting to see our clients&#8217; creative work come together in our art programs,&#8221; said Erin Bentzinger, adaptive therapy specialist in the MMI Department of Recreational Therapy. &#8220;Our annual art sale is an opportunity not only to share their creativity with the institute and the UNMC campus as a whole, but for them to help support the programs that they enjoy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The sale raised close to $1,000, said Bentzinger, who called it a success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were able to showcase a variety of collaborative and independent art from all of our programs,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The funds raised will be used to further enhance the programs. The annual show allows us to offer more visual arts opportunities, and gives the participants a chance to work together on a fun activity with a beautiful outcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interim Director of Recreational Therapy Nicole Giron calls art an opportunity for full, whole-person expression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can see the talent on display at our art sale,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We are quite proud to showcase it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the sale will go to support MMI recreational therapy art programming for youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.<\/p>\n<p><b>Children&#8217;s Oncology Group lauds Human Genetics Laboratory<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Human Genetics Laboratory exceeded the annual benchmark for minimum abnormality detection rate in a review by the Children&#8217;s Oncology Group (COG). As a result, the lab maintains its status as an approved cytogenetics laboratory for the Children&#8217;s Oncology Group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These studies are often technically challenging, but the results are critical for patient care. We are both honored and proud to be able to serve children in this way,&#8221; said lab director Jennifer Sanmann, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News and
