{"id":66532,"date":"2020-01-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/01\/22\/clinical-trial-spotlight-sleep-disorders-in-adolescents\/"},"modified":"2020-01-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T06:00:00","slug":"clinical-trial-spotlight-sleep-disorders-in-adolescents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/01\/22\/clinical-trial-spotlight-sleep-disorders-in-adolescents\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Trial Spotlight: Sleep disorders in adolescents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>UNMC researchers are seeking subjects for the study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/nursing\/research\/research-publications\/sleep-smart.html \">&#8220;A SMART Design to Improve Sleep Disturbance in Adolescents with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.&#8221;<\/a> (IRB#: 775-18-FB)<\/p>\n<p><b>About the study:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sleep problems are common in adolescents with ADHD and\/or autism. Sleep problems are often linked to physical and mental health problems. Family members may also be impacted by their child&#8217;s sleep problems. The purpose of this study is to compare sleep interventions (bedtime tracking and\/or melatonin). <\/p>\n<p>This study is using an adaptive design. If the child&#8217;s sleep does not improve, they will have an opportunity to use a different sleep intervention. The goal of this study is to better understand sleep and sleep interventions in adolescents with ADHD and\/or autism.<\/p>\n<p><b>The study is seeking volunteers for the winter and spring cohorts:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10-18 year olds;\n<li>Diagnosis of ADHD and\/or autism;\n<li>Sleeping less than 8 hours, several nights per week; and\n<li>Medication free or on a stable medication plan.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Exclusions for child:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will not stop melatonin 2 months before the study;\n<li>Diagnosed with sleep apnea;\n<li>Visually impaired with known inability to detect light;\n<li>Known genetic condition;\n<li>Not able to take oral medication; and\n<li>Will not wear activity\/sleep device daily.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Expectations for participants:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nine-week study;\n<li>Three meetings at UNMC;\n<li>Fill out sleep questionnaires;\n<li>Provide saliva and urine samples to measure melatonin (optional);\n<li>Wear an activity\/sleep device on the wrist for 9 weeks; and\n<li>Bedtime tracking and\/or take melatonin.<\/ul>\n<p>Although you may not benefit from being in this study, there is no cost. You will be reimbursed for time and travel.
