{"id":66594,"date":"2019-11-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/11\/26\/emerging-professionals-program-gives-back\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T17:38:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T22:38:54","slug":"emerging-professionals-program-gives-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/11\/26\/emerging-professionals-program-gives-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Emerging Professionals Program gives back"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine Emerging Professionals Program (EPP) hosted its fall volunteer day last month.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty EPP members gave back to the community by volunteering their time at Food Bank for the Heartland. During their 2.5 hour shift, the team packaged 4,480 meals that will be distributed to 1,120 students through the Food Bank&#8217;s BackPack program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having the opportunity for our EPP members to partner with the Food Bank for a second year was exciting. Any chance we have to help address the important issue of food insecurity in our community is important,&#8221; said Laura Vinson, EPP community engagement co-chair.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about their volunteer experience, one EPP member mentioned their favorite part was working with colleagues to make an impact in our community. While another expressed their appreciation for providing them an opportunity to meet other emerging professionals from various departments within UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hearing this type of feedback reiterates that the EPP&#8217;s mission of providing a platform that allows our members to connect, engage, and grow is being shown through our events, and we couldn&#8217;t be more proud of that,&#8221; said Katherine Porto, EPP president.<\/p>\n<p>The EPP&#8217;s next event is a fireside chat with Sarah Richards, M.D., on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Dr. Richards is an assistant professor in the section of hospital medicine and the medical director of patient and provider experience at Nebraska Medicine. During this casual and interactive event, Dr. Richards will talk about her leadership journey, including both successes and struggles as well as her perspectives related to patient experience.
