Merry Lindsey, PhD, has been appointed as editor-in-chief for the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, effective January 2021. She will be the second consecutive UNMC faculty member to take on this role, as she will succeed Irving H. Zucker, PhD, UNMC professor of cellular and integrative physiology, who served in the role since October 2013.
\n 
\nThe journal is a premier journal that publishes basic and translational research related to the function of the heart and blood vessels in normal and pathological states. Those selected as editor-in-chief traditionally are well-known scientists in a cardiovascular research related field, Dr. Zucker said.
\n 
\nDr. Lindsey is the chair and Stokes-Shackleford Professor of the UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology and the director of the Center for Heart and Vascular Research at UNMC and a research health scientist with the Omaha VA Medical Center.
\n 
\n"Over the years, I have transitioned from reader to author to editorial board member to consulting editor to associate editor to deputy editor and now editor-in-chief. Because I have experienced all sides, I know what a great journal it is.
\n 
\n"The journal has a solid reputation with established scientists, and I look forward to working with many of them as editorial board members. I grew up in my research career reading AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology articles. During my term, I will focus on embracing the new generation of cardiovascular physiologists to actively engage them both in the journal and the American Physiological Society."

\nDr. Lindsey, who has worked on the journal in various editorial roles since 2011, will initially serve a three-year term, which is renewable for another three years.
\n 
\nDr. Zucker said it was fitting that Dr. Lindsey take over the journal.
\n 
\n"The UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology has focused on cardiovascular and renal science since its inception," he said. "Now, the UNMC Center for Heart and Vascular Research builds on this strength in the translational arena. Therefore keeping the editor-in-chief position at UNMC makes sense as Dr. Lindsey helps to shape cardiovascular research globally through activities promoted by the journal. She is clearly the best person for this job and will help to promote UNMC as a major center of cardiovascular research."
