UNMC’s Mark Rupp, MD, past president of The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), will deliver the 2020 SHEA Lectureship on preparing for future outbreaks. <\/p>\n

Dr. Rupp’s virtual presentation titled, “When This is Over, and We are Back to Normal. . .It Won’t be Normal,” will be given Friday, Oct. 23 at 9 a.m. ET during IDWeek 2020<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Dr. Rupp, chief of the UNMC Division of Infectious Diseases, will discuss 12 lessons learned so far from the SARS CoV-2\/COVID-19 pandemic including the societal inequities that have resulted in excess suffering and death in minority populations, the COVID-19 infodemic and the dangers of the rush to publication. He also will discuss the pros and cons of social media, the need for better personal protective equipment and the politicization of public health. He’ll share practical advice for professionals involved with infection prevention and infectious diseases, and how society can be better prepared for the next pandemic. <\/p>\n

“This is a singular honor for me, and I am very pleased and humbled to have been selected,” Dr. Rupp said. “The award has been given out since 1992 to one person per year in the field of infection prevention and previous award winners are persons whom I admire and have tried to emulate, but with whom I never thought I would join ranks.” <\/p>\n
