The UNMC Office of Inclusion invites the campus community to its second “Conversations for Inclusive Excellence” on Feb. 11 to discuss combatting racism and place-ism in medicine.
\n

Sheritta Strong, MD, director of inclusion, will moderate the virtual session, which runs from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants can join the meeting via Zoom<\/a>. (Passcode: 074470)
\n

Attendees will view a Ted Talk by Nwando Olayiwola, MD, professor and chair of the department of family and community medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The group then will discuss how the medical profession has done harm to patients by perpetuating racism and committing “place-ism” by ignoring place and health connections.
\n

Dr. Olayiwola, who presented during UNMC’s Breakthrough Thinking series, also offers solutions for how technology and educational reform can help. Attendees will have an opportunity to examine their own understandings of the concepts presented and how they are relevant to UNMC and the broader Omaha community.
\n

During monthly “Conversations for Inclusive Excellence” sessions, individuals will engage in meaningful and, at times, uncomfortable conversations to co-create understanding. Participants also will gain tools to continue the dialogue within their departments and offices. The sessions, which take place the second Thursday of every month, will challenge participants and the assumptions we all make consciously and unconsciously.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
