The Nebraska Medicine Emergency Department recently received accreditation for its clinical ultrasound program, also known as point of care ultrasound, for the next three years from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
\n

“This accreditation signifies that we run a quality program that meets the high standards established by ACEP and provide the best care for our patients,” said Jared Marx, MD, ultrasound director and fellowship director for Nebraska Medicine and associate professor of emergency medicine at UNMC.
\n

Point of care ultrasound is one of the most important diagnostic tools available to a physician at the bedside especially in critical care situations, Dr. Marx said.
\n

It is critically important, he said, for physicians to be properly trained in image acquisition, interpretation and clinical implementation.
\n

The accreditation applies to the emergency departments at both the Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center.
\n

“There are only about 50 programs in the country that meet the accrediting guidelines and we have two of them,” Dr. Marx said.
\n

Dr. Marx said his department also works with the UNMC College of Medicine to introduce students to clinical ultrasound as well as train residents and physicians on how to obtain and interpret the images.
