Peggy Cain, photographer, will retire on April 1 after 37 years at College of Dentistry. She started working at the college part time when she was a student at UNL. When a full-time position became available, Peggy jumped at the chance to become a permanent member of the college’s team.
\n 
\n"Capturing the college’s memories and moments has been a large part of my life. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with outstanding faculty, staff, students and alumni," Peggy said. "I’ve photographed generations of families – students whose parents attended the college. I’ve said that when I start photographing the grandchildren of former students, it’s time for me to retire!"<\/p>\n

Peggy’s favorite part about her job is that every day has been different. She’s photographed countless college events and community outreach activities and worked with faculty members on their instructional materials and research projects.  <\/p>\n

"One of my favorite memories was when I photographed the 2010 Special Olympics National Games. It was a very special experience. The participants were so genuinely grateful for the event and for everyone who helped make it possible," Peggy said. "I’ve also enjoyed being involved in SHARING Clinics and Children’s Dental Day and capturing the patients’ transformations to show others that dentists are here to help and they don’t have to fear going to a dentist." 
\n 
\nAlso among Peggy’s treasured memories are "photographing Dr. Stan Harn’s phenomenal dental museum and the women’s Christmas parties."
\n 
\nPeggy has felt connected to the college since she was a young girl growing up in the East Campus neighborhood. She remembers riding her bike past the college when it was being constructed in the 1960’s. In fact, her second cousin was one of the college’s architects.
\n 
\nShe has seen many changes throughout her career. Peggy recalls the time-consuming process of developing photographs in a dark room, and now photography is completely digital. College-wide, the main change she’s seen is the increase in women becoming dentists and men becoming dental hygienists.
\n 
\n"Most of all, I will miss the people who’ve made my experience at the college so special. I had a great mentor, Larry Gatliff, who worked in the learning resources department. He taught me more about photography than I learned in school," Peggy said. "I will miss my coworkers who have turned into longtime friends. I have learned something valuable from each one of them."
\n 
\nPeggy’s parting message for her colleagues: "This last year has been, and continues to be, challenging for us all. The best way we can overcome adversities is by demonstrating patience, dedication and humor. Appreciate those around you. Treat one another with respect and kindness and be genuinely happy for others! A sincere thanks to all – it’s been a good ride!"
