The National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) at the University of Nebraska (NU)\u00a0has launched NSRI Fellows\u00a0to amplify the university\u2019s\u00a0research\u00a0contributions\u00a0to\u00a0the Department of Defense\u00a0(DOD)\u00a0and other\u00a0federal agencies\u00a0with\u00a0national security\u00a0missions.<\/p>\n

The inaugural\u00a0group\u00a0includes 74 researchers from across the NU system and 24 from the\u00a0University of Nebraska\u00a0Medical Center. Together, NSRI Fellows\u00a0will\u00a0contribute their expertise, talent and foresight\u00a0to build\u00a0multidisciplinary teams that\u202fdevelop solutions for complex problems across the spectrum of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive threats.<\/p>\n

“As a\u00a0DOD-designated\u00a0University Affiliated Research Center\u00a0(UARC), it is our\u00a0responsibility\u00a0to continue to look ahead to\u00a0the next threat and the next solution,” said Maj. Gen. USAF (Ret.) Rick Evans, NSRI interim\u00a0executive\u00a0director. “NSRI Fellows will bring our institute even closer together with the experts across the university system, so we can continue to deliver on our core competencies and maintain the research and development\u00a0expertise,\u00a0capabilities\u00a0and technology\u00a0the nation needs today\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and will need tomorrow.”<\/p>\n

Since it was established in 2012,\u00a0NSRI\u00a0has conducted and facilitated\u00a0124 projects through $180 million of contracts and grants\u00a0with NU and the\u00a0federal government.\u00a0In September 2020 its UARC status was renewed by its sponsor,\u00a0U.S. Strategic Command,\u00a0with a $92 million contract\u00a0vehicle.<\/p>\n

Several of the appointed fellows\u00a0have\u00a0led or contributed significant deliverables\u00a0to\u00a0these projects that help reach the\u00a0nation\u2019s national security objectives, including\u00a0leadership and contributions toward\u00a0developing\u00a0American forces\u2019 next-gen pharmaceutical defenses,\u00a0<\/a>military medical personnel assessment tools<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0oxygenated microbubbles for a life-saving solution to traumatic lung injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“UNMC has been committed to the development of NSRI and its mission from the outset,” said Jennifer Larsen, MD, UNMC vice chancellor for research. “The NSRI Fellows\u00a0program represents just one more mechanism for engagement of our faculty with NSRI who bring considerable expertise in many areas, but particularly all aspects of biosecurity, warfighter readiness, and remote and\u00a0en route combat casualty care, including pharmaceutical and technology solutions.”<\/p>\n

The inaugural class of NSRI Fellows were nominated by NU campus leaders and NSRI directors. Nominations can be sent to NSRI from NU and NSRI leadership any time.<\/p>\n

NSRI Fellows are led by Neal Woollen, DVM, NSRI senior research strategy officer.<\/p>\n

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a vivid example of how\u00a0threats impact all of society,” Dr. Woollen said. “It emphasizes the need for broad, inclusive and effective countermeasures to enhance readiness, deny effects, protect service members and society, make society more resilient and deter intentional use. NSRI Fellows are another mechanism NSRI will employ to contribute to these objectives. We have the expertise through the University of Nebraska, and we must continue to find new ways to leverage it.”<\/p>\n
