that. I just loved camping. I loved the camaraderie, I loved working as a team. I loved learning lifelong ethical values, how to be a leader, and accountable for other people. I loved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the best things I\u2019ve done in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He still loves it, looking back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways, he still lives it. Boy Scout camp. And not just any camp, but a special leadership training course, with Scouts from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. It would be boy-led, and everything he loved about being a Boy Scout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had heard it was a wonderful experience,\u201d Dr. Hanna said. \u201cI was very excited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a place called Little Sioux Scout Ranch.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n<div class=\"panel panel--short image-group\">\n\t<div class=\"panel__container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"panel__img__group \">\n\t\t\t\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/tornado-whitecoat.jpg\" alt=\"Whitecoat\" \/>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/tornado-oath.jpg\" alt=\"Oath\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"inset medium-text\">\n\t\t<div class=\"inset__container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"text-md \">\n\t\t\t\t\n\n<p>On June 11, 2008, it had been a stormy morning, later turning hot, which, \u201cI now realize,\u201d Dr. Hanna said, \u201cis kind of the prime recipe for severe weather.\u201d Leaders took heed, canceling that evening\u2019s activities. The boys settled in for a Monty Python movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were all really excited for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the storm rolled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Power went out in the shelter. Kevin looked out the window and trees were sideways. \u201cI\u2019d never seen anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The boys all ducked under tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few seconds later, the world changed. Four boys \u2013 Josh Fennen, 13; Sam Thomsen, 13; Ben Petrzilka, 14; and Aaron Eilerts, 14 \u2013 were killed. Dozens more were injured. But Dr. Hanna \u2013 13-year-old Kevin \u2013 did not know any of that. Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He woke up facedown. He tried to get up, but couldn\u2019t move. His legs wouldn\u2019t work. His friend, Jake Wilkinson, was at his side. Are you OK?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t move my legs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His pelvis was broken. He was grateful he wasn\u2019t hurt as badly as some other boys. He got hold of a cell phone &#8212; maybe from an EMT? &#8212; and left a message for his parents. Imagine getting that voicemail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, they had already seen the weather and were racing up the highway to Little Sioux. Urology? Yes, urology. \u201cI loved the surgeries,\u201d he said. \u201cI loved the people. I loved the patients. It\u2019s just kind of the breadth of life.\u201d It was about becoming a leader, being part of a team, helping people who needed help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He loved becoming a urologist like he loved being a Boy Scout. To be where it had all happened. To face it. It had changed him. So I went back as staff, and I went back the next year as well. I think that was very therapeutic for me, being around other boys who were there. And solidifying the sense of community that we had.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same sense of community he has now. Not just with his fellow med school classmates. Not just with his teachers, and mentors. But, most important, with the patients. He\u2019s working at the Mayo Clinic. He\u2019s graduated from UNMC. He gets to put all of this work to use, toward helping people. He\u2019s made it. And yet, he\u2019s just starting out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of hard to wrap my head around it a little bit,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been the four hardest years of my life. It\u2019s certainly the hardest I\u2019ve worked at anything. So there\u2019s a tremendous sense of accomplishment and excitement to start the next step. A little bit of nerves to start the next step and all the responsibility that comes with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGenerally, I feel very excited and feel very proud. Very proud of every one of my friends, and my class, for getting through it. And getting through it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same way he once got through it together with another group of friends. The ones who carried on. And the ones who, in ways big and small, he still carries with him.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"inset medium-text\">\n\t\t<div class=\"inset__container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"text-md inset--last\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNMC employees at Little Sioux<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with Dr. Hanna, three UNMC employees \u2013 Jeffrey Baldwin, PharmD; Linda Chaney; and Fred Ullrich \u2013 were at Little Sioux Scout Ranch the night of the tornado as adult Boy Scout leaders. Ullrich, an IT specialist and statistician at the College of Public Health, was in one of the shelters that took a direct hit. Ullrich told the boys to take cover, and saw the roof tear off the building. Later, he helped rescue others from the rubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Fred Ullrich really is a true hero,&#8221; Dr. Baldwin said in 2008. &#8220;I want people to know
