The\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34245743\/\">paper\u202fwas\u202fpublished\u202fJuly 6 online\u202fin\u202fCHEST<\/a>, a\u202fprominent medical\u202fjournal.\u202f<br \/>\n<P>&#8220;Our goal was to determine whether\u202fInterleukin-33 (IL-33)\u202fwas in the lungs of patients who did not survive COVID-19 and compare it to IL-33 expression\u202fin\u202fother inflammatory lung diseases,&#8221; said\u202fJill Poole, MD,\u202fchief of the\u202fUNMC\u202fDepartment of Internal Medicine&#8217;s\u202fDivision of Allergy and Immunology. She is\u202fsenior author of the\u202fresearch letter\u202ftitled, &#8220;IL-33 Depletion in COVID-19 Lungs.&#8221;\u202f<br \/>\n\u202f<P>Other researchers\u202fhave reported\u202fthat blood levels of\u202fInterleukin-33 (IL-33)\u202fwere increased at time of hospitalization for COVID-19 and that high levels predicted poor outcomes for the\u202fSARS-Cov-2 infection.<br \/>\n<P>Dr. Poole said in addition to its role in allergic asthma, previous studies have shown elevated IL-33 in the blood and\/or lung of those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease\u202f(COPD) and end-stage lung disease.<br \/>\n<P>A\u202fcomparative analysis of lung IL-33 expression in cases of\u202flong-term effects of a temporary disease or injury, such as in COVID,\u202fare lacking\u202fand thus the impetus for the UNMC study, she said.\u202fIL-33 plays an integral role in optimal functioning of the\u202flungs in wound repair, fibrosis, and remodeling processes. IL-33 is released\u202finside and outside of cells\u202ffollowing insult or damage induced by various infectious, noxious, or environmental agents.\u202f<br \/>\n<P>Dr. Poole said using\u202fseveral\u202fUNMC\u202fbio-banks,\u202fresearchers\u202ffound\u202fthat IL-33 was profoundly depleted\u202f&#8211;\u202fessentially absent\u202f&#8211;\u202fin the lungs of all eight COVID-19 patients who did not survive COVID-19.\u202f<br \/>\n<P>&#8220;IL-33\u202fin\u202fthese COVID patients were\u202fcompared\u202fto normal\u202fhuman lungs as well as those with COPD and\u202fchronic, progressive lung disease\u202fwho\u202fhad increased levels of lung IL-33,&#8221; Dr. Poole said.\u202f&#8221;Interestingly, IL-33 levels were greatly increased in\u202fa survivor of\u202fCOVID-19\u202fwho\u202fdeveloped severe lung fibrosis\u202f(thickening or scarring)\u202ffollowing COVID-19 infection.&#8221;\u202f<br \/>\n<P>&#8220;Our study\u202fstrengthens\u202fthe relationship and importance of IL-33 in COVID-19,\u202fas well as its role in chronic inflammatory lung diseases,&#8221; Dr. Poole said. &#8220;We suggest that\u202fadditional and longitudinal assessments\u202fthroughout\u202fthe\u202fCOVID-19 disease process\u202fare warranted. It is important\u202fto understand the mechanisms and timing\u202fof lung IL-33 expression and regulation for promoting damage or driving wound repair processes\u202ffor\u202fpotential interventional strategies\u202faimed at IL-33 in disease management.&#8221;\u202f<br \/>\n<P>First author\u202fof the paper\u202fis post-doctoral fellow Rohit Gaurav, PhD. The multi-disciplinary effort involved several UNMC\u202finternal medicine\u202fdivisions\u202fin addition to the departments of pathology and microbiology and the College of Public Health.\u202f<br \/>\n<P>The\u202fresearch\u202fwas\u202fcollectively\u202ffunded\u202fthrough\u202fUNMC grants\u202fand\u202fa variety of\u202ffederal\u202fsources.\u202f<br \/>\n\u202f<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:
