Dr. Chatzizisis honored by European Bifurcation Club<\/b><\/p>\n

Yiannis Chatzizisis, MD, PhD, received the “Bifurcation Person of the Year” award during the annual international conference of the European Bifurcation Club. The annual meeting, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, is a think tank that brings together experts and opinion leaders in interventional cardiology from all around the world.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Dr. Chatzizisis, a UNMC professor of medicine,\u00a0physiology and engineering and chief of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Interventional Cardiology Section, also presented to the international scientific community on he and his team\u2019s published work. His presentation involved how computational simulations can guide\u00a0clinical decision making, pre-procedural planning, stent research and development, virtual clinical trials, and education and training in interventional cardiology.<\/p>\n

He said he dedicated the award to his research team of talented engineers and physicians he works with in the lab.<\/p>\n

“During the last decade Yiannis published many papers in prestigious publications with an impressive team of engineers and we are all waiting for the next one,” said Yves Louvard, MD, past president and co-founder of the European Bifurcation Club. “He is a kind man and a great scientist.”<\/p>\n

Faculty invited to attend December commencement ceremony<\/b><\/p>\n

The 2021 December commencement ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 17 at the Baxter Arena.<\/p>\n

Faculty members are encouraged to attend the event, particularly if they have instructed one or more of the graduates.\u00a0There will be a reserved section\u00a0in the audience for all general faculty who wish to attend.\u00a0Academic attire is not required, as faculty will not be seated onstage.<\/p>\n

NSRI awarded $25 million NNSA contract for strategic deterrence, nuclear threat reduction support<\/b><\/p>\n

The National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI)<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Nebraska (NU) has been awarded a five-year, $25 million indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)<\/a>\u00a0to support strategic deterrence and nuclear threat reduction efforts.<\/p>\n

“This is an exciting new partnership for NSRI and the University of Nebraska that will open even more doors for our researchers to do cutting-edge work to keep our nation safe,” said NU System President Ted Carter. “Today\u2019s national security needs are urgent and complex, especially when it comes to nuclear threats and other weapons of mass destruction. I am so proud that the University of Nebraska can help lead the way in supporting our country\u2019s defense efforts.”<\/p>\n

Dr. Davies speaks at international forum<\/b><\/p>\n

Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, spoke at the World University Presidents\u2019 Forum on Medical Sciences, hosted by Shandong University in China. The forum\u2019s focus was the free exchange of ideas on international partnerships and cooperation in medicine, medical education, and strategies for addressing the global public health crisis.<\/p>\n

Dr. Davies was joined by other leaders from universities in Canada, China, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden\u00a0and the United Kingdom. Dr. Davies spoke on transforming health care education with emerging technologies.<\/p>\n

“UNMC was pleased to be part of this international forum in recognition of the 120th\u00a0anniversary of Shandong University,” Dr. Davies said. “Our faculty and students on both sides have been beneficiaries of this 10-year partnership, and we hope that the next 10 years will lead to continued collaboration and engagement.”<\/p>\n

One of UNMC’s collaborations with Shandong University is the Summer Research Program, coordinated by the UNMC Office of Global Engagement.<\/p>\n

Dr. Boer receives Certificate of Added Qualification\u00a0in\u00a0Advanced Diagnostic Bronchoscopy<\/b><\/p>\n

Brian Boer, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, is one of 15 physicians in the country to receive the Certificate of Added Qualification\u00a0in\u00a0Advanced Diagnostic Bronchoscopy.<\/p>\n

The certificate, created in 2019 by the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, demonstrates specific expertise and added value to complex patient care.<\/p>\n

Food trucks on campus next week<\/b><\/p>\n

Next week, the medical center community again will be able to grab lunch from a food truck on campus.<\/p>\n
