Employees of Union Pacific, one of the nation’s leading transportation companies, will be teaming\u202fwith therapists from\u202fthe\u202fUniversity of Nebraska Medical Center’s\u202fMunroe-Meyer Institute and\u202fstudents from area universities to\u202fprovide a different type of transportation for\u202fyoung\u202fchildren\u202fwho\u202fface mobility\u202fchallenges\u202fdue to\u202fintellectual and developmental disabilities. <\/p>\n

The\u202fgroup will\u202fconvert\u202fride-on toy\u202fcars\u202finto\u202faffordable\u202fassistive mobility vehicles\u202ffor 11 children. The project is part of\u202fGoBabyGo!,\u202fa national program that provides modified ride-on cars for kids with developmental disabilities. These\u202fcars\u202fwill be\u202fprovided at no cost to the families to promote early\u202fand\u202findependent mobility.\u202f <\/p>\n

Mobility for children at that age\u202fis critical for development of\u202fsocial, cognitive and motor skills, but power wheelchairs are typically\u202fexpensive,\u202fand children\u202ffrequently\u202foutgrow them.\u202f <\/p>\n

The event, with COVID-19 safety protocols,\u202fwill be held\u202fat Union Pacific headquarters at 1400 Douglas St. in Omaha\u202fon Oct. 30, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with families arriving around 11\u202fa.m.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n

"Union Pacific’s employees have been very interested and willing to contribute to the\u202fGoBabyGo!\u202feffort," said\u202fSandy Willett, PhD, director of the MMI Department of Physical Therapy. "Union Pacific certainly is a company that understands the importance of mobility\u202fand the sense of freedom it provides, and their employees\u202fhave been enthusiastic about this new collaboration.\u202fWe greatly appreciate this new partnership."\u202f <\/p>\n

MMI’s first\u202fGoBabyGo!\u202fbuild\u202fwas in 2016. Since then, the institute has led events that provided more than 40\u202fcars for children\u202fages\u202f9 months to 6 years.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n

"This is a wonderful program, and we are honored to be partnering with the Munroe-Meyer Institute to provide children more opportunities to move, socialize and explore the world.\u202fEASE,\u202four employee resource group focused on disability awareness and inclusion, and our employees\u202fare looking forward to meeting and working with these children and their\u202ffamilies," said\u202fAshok Fichadia, assistant vice president-IT development for Union Pacific Railroad.\u202f <\/p>\n

"Through actively moving, we learn so much more about our world than by passively looking at it," said UNMC physical therapist and organizer Joanie Bergeron. "We are pleased that UP is partnering with us to allow this to happen. It makes your day when you see a child able to move on their own for the first time. The smiles on everyone’s faces are priceless." <\/p>\n

The event\u202fis made possible by a grant to the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute\u202ffunded by a donation to the University of Nebraska Foundation.\u202fOccupational and physical therapy and engineering students from UNMC, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Methodist College and Creighton University also are taking part in the event. <\/p>\n
