{"id":72548,"date":"2021-12-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-30T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2021\/12\/30\/unmc-for-the-record-530\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:18:46","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:18:46","slug":"unmc-for-the-record-530","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2021\/12\/30\/unmc-for-the-record-530\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC for the record"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b>Dr. Byrareddy&#39;s lab explores omicron<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The lab of&nbsp;Siddappa Byrareddy, PhD, published a paper recently about features of the omicron variant.<\/p>\n<p>The new study, &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0896841121001876\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant: Unique features and their impact on pre-existing antibodies<\/a>,&quot; was published digitally earlier this month in Science Direct and will be featured in the January issue.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The omicron variant is closely related to the gamma variant.<\/li>\n<li>There are 46 high prevalent mutations throughout the omicron variant.<\/li>\n<li>A significant number of the mutations are at the antibody binding surface of the S protein.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The authors wrote: &quot;The structural analyses suggest that the uniquely positioned mutations in the Omicron variant may reduce the binding of antibodies present in an individual induced by either prior infection or following vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><b>University of Nebraska programs and Nebraska nonprofits eligible for WIN funds <\/b><\/p>\n<p>University of Nebraska programs and Nebraska nonprofit organizations can submit funding ideas to Women Investing in Nebraska for grant awards in 2022.&nbsp;Grant seekers must submit an <a href=\"https:\/\/womeninvestinginnebraska.org\/grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online letter of inquiry form<\/a> by Feb. 16.<\/p>\n<p>Based on submissions, WIN will invite 12 to 16 grant seekers to provide formal grant proposals. Grant seekers must be a part of the University of Nebraska system or be a Nebraska nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity.<\/p>\n<p>The grant amounts will be based on the total amount of gifts received this year from the members of WIN.
