{"id":72606,"date":"2022-02-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/02\/02\/changes-set-for-promotion-and-tenure-committee\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:19:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:19:08","slug":"changes-set-for-promotion-and-tenure-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/02\/02\/changes-set-for-promotion-and-tenure-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes set for Promotion and Tenure Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The UNMC College of Medicine has made changes to the promotion and tenure process for faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The purpose is to simplify, clarify and facilitate the pathway to promotion,&quot; said Steven Lisco, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology and chair of the promotion and tenure committee.<\/p>\n<p>The changes include the creation of two subcommittees, with Dr. Lisco serving as chair and three co-chairs: Pamela Carmines, PhD, Teri Mauch, MD, PhD, and Wallace Thoreson, PhD.<\/p>\n<p>The committees are:<\/p>\n<p><b>The Professor and Tenure Promotion Subcommittee <\/b>(all members are full professors), which will evaluate the following candidates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant professor to tenured associate professor<\/li>\n<li>Associate professor to full professor<\/li>\n<li>Associate professor to tenured professor<\/li>\n<li>Tenured associate professor to tenured professot<\/li>\n<li>Tenure with no change in rank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Assistant and Associate Promotions Subcommittee <\/b>(co-chairs are full professors, remaining members may be associate or full professors), which will evaluate the following candidates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instructor to assistant professor<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor to associate professor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. Lisco became chair of the committee in 2015, a year that saw 38 candidates being reviewed for promotion and tenure. In 2021, 86 faculty were considered. This year, more than 100 candidates are being considered.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This coincides with the massive expansion of the college faculty as Nebraska Medicine and the basic science departments have grown,&quot; Dr. Lisco said. &quot;Our research dollars and ranking have grown, our national standing has grown &#8211; we attract the best and the brightest, and we need an infrastructure in place to facilitate the promotion of faculty who contribute to the college&rsquo;s mission.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;With the two committees, we can provide the appropriate rigor in the review process,&quot; he said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the committee has allowed for two pathways to the rank of associate professor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The current, dual-emphasis pathway, which requires faculty to reach a high level of expertise in two of the three areas of emphasis related to the college&rsquo;s mission &#8212; teaching, research and other scholarly activity, and patient care &#8211; and demonstrate effectiveness in the other.<\/li>\n<li>A new, &quot;focus emphasis&quot; pathway, which requires faculty to reach an exceptional level in one area of the three areas and demonstrate effectiveness in the two others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&quot;We had people in the basic science department who have a national reputation as master educators or amazing scientists &#8211; but because they weren&rsquo;t reaching a certain level in other areas, we weren&rsquo;t able to get them from assistant to associate professor &#8211; and they would leave,&quot; Dr. Lisco said. &quot;This new pathway allows people who are exceptional in a single area and effective in other areas to be promoted. Exceptional means you stand out from the crowd on a national level.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The committee also cleared up some ambiguity in the years of service needed before being considered for promotion, setting specific years of service before promotion can be considered, and specific criteria that need to be met for advancement.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I am excited about these new changes and the accomplished faculty members who will be joining the promotion and tenure committee,&quot; Dr. Lisco said. &quot;Rank advancement and the awarding of tenure is an important part of recognizing the contributions of our College of Medicine faculty to the college&rsquo;s growth in expertise and national stature.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New
