The Munroe-Meyer Institute and its community partners held the sixth annual Hispanic Little Angels holiday event in December, distributing toys and gifts to families of children with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Leticia Franco, a member of Hispanic Little Angels, a support group for Spanish-speaking families for children with disabilities, provided the location for the drive-through event at her Bellevue-based accounting firm.<\/p>\n

Volunteers, including members of the MMI University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Family Care Enhancement Project, Nebraska Lifespan Network and United Cerebral Palsy, handed out gifts and household goods to families and those who drove through, and families were given the option to meet with Santa, as well.<\/p>\n

"We had a bilingual Santa, and this year kids were allowed to get out of the car and visit with Santa from a distance, if the families were comfortable doing that," said Kim Falk, one of the MMI organizers.<\/p>\n

Gifts were provided through donations from MMI employees, partnerships with Toys for Tots and United Cerebral Palsy, and through other community partners, such as Eileen’s Cookies and Lush Cosmetics. Gifts were given to all the children in each family, not just the child with a disability.<\/p>\n

"There were 100 families that participated, and 268 children received a toy, and we also had a caregiver self-care bag to give to each family," Falk said. "We wanted to recognize the caregivers as well."<\/p>\n

Families were invited through the Hispanic Little Angels, OneWorld Community Health Center and Boys Town, as well as through the MMI parent resource coordinators. Other partners included La Nueva radio station, the Early Development Network, and teen volunteers from Miss Latina Nebraska Pageants who helped hand out gifts.<\/p>\n

"The event was wonderful, and the families were very pleased," Falk said. "We are thrilled that this continues to go on to support their families. Many people thanked us and they thought it was great to see Santa back again."<\/p>\n

The six-year-old event has helped MMI build a connection to the Latino community, said organizer Graciela Sharif.<\/p>\n

"The need is there, especially during the holiday season where some families after the pandemic are really struggling," Sharif said. "And the young people who came and volunteered, that’s the way to educate and build a community."<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
