VCR search committee gains new members <\/b><\/p>\n

The search committee tasked with finding a new vice chancellor for research<\/a> has grown by two. The committee, chaired by UNMC’s Ken Cowan, MD, PhD, director and physician-in-chief of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer, now stands at 26 members with the addition of Laura Flores, MD-PhD scholar, and Lani Zimmerman, PhD, professor in the UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division. <\/p>\n

The committee is charged with finding a successor for Jennifer Larsen, MD, who in December announced she would step away from her role once her replacement was identified. Dr. Larsen has led UNMC’s research enterprise since 2011 and will remain the Degen Professor of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at UNMC, a position she has held since 1987.  <\/p>\n

Olson Center presents webinar on skin cancer in women<\/b><\/p>\n

Melodi Javid Whitley, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of dermatology and director of transplant dermatology in the UNMC Department of Dermatology, will present a free webinar on skin cancer in women. <\/p>\n

The webinar will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8.<\/p>\n

Dr. Whitley will discuss the epidemiology and risk factors for skin cancer among women, identify the key features of skin cancer in women, including how to decipher concerning lesions, and describe common options for skin cancer treatment. <\/p>\n

UNMC Student Delegates receives civic engagement grant<\/b><\/p>\n

UNMC Student Delegates is among the recipients of the 2022 Civic Engagement Microgrant Initiative<\/a>, awarded annually by Research!America and the Rita Allen Foundation. Now in its fourth year, the microgrant program provides funding to graduate student and postdoc-led science policy groups from across the U.S. to develop and lead outreach activities in their local communities. <\/p>\n

UNMC Student Delegates is a grassroots advocacy group of people who are interested in state and federal legislative updates and advocate on issues of importance to UNMC and the University of Nebraska.<\/p>\n

The $2,000 grant will fund the "Science and Health Policy in the Workforce" at UNMC, a monthly lunchtime virtual seminar to help attendees understand the intricacies and complexities of current labor\/worker shortages, recognize disparities in science and health policy that influence worker shortages, particularly in minority or underrepresented communities, and develop policy recommendations or determine how to modify current policies to address science and health policy faults and disparities.<\/p>\n
