New Investigator Award recipients&nbsp;also need&nbsp;to demonstrate scholarly activity, such as publishing their research and\/or presenting their findings at national conventions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Name:<\/b> Palsamy Periyasamy, PhD&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><b>Title:<\/b> Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience<\/li>\n<li><b>Joined UNMC:<\/b> 2010&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><b>Hometown:<\/b> Ariyalur, Tamilnadu, India&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Research focus:&nbsp;<\/b>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Epigenetics<\/li>\n<li>HIV and substance use disorders<\/li>\n<li>Neuroinflammation<b>&nbsp;<\/b>&nbsp;<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why is research important in the world today?&nbsp;<\/b>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because scientific research is the means of the development of human societies. Also, research empowers us with knowledge, drives onward progress and increases the quality of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>My research will make a difference because:&nbsp;<\/b>Drug abuse among HIV-infected individuals poses a significant health burden to society. One of the hallmark features of drug abuse is increased glial cells activation in the setting of HIV-1 infection. My research goal is to investigate the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms involved in HIV-1 (viral proteins) and drug abuse-mediated neuroinflammation. Information gleaned from these studies will form the basis for the future development of novel therapeutic approaches to mitigate central nervous system complications of NeuroHIV.<\/p>\n<p><b>The best advice I&rsquo;ve ever received is: <\/b>Hard work pays off if you&#39;re patient enough to see it through.<\/p>\n<p><b>Three things you may not know about me are:<\/b>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I write Tamil poetry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>I enjoy playing with kids.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>I love to chat with
