{"id":72982,"date":"2022-02-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/02\/28\/addiction-medicine-fellowship-gains-accreditation\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:21:47","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:21:47","slug":"addiction-medicine-fellowship-gains-accreditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/02\/28\/addiction-medicine-fellowship-gains-accreditation\/","title":{"rendered":"Addiction medicine fellowship gains accreditation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><span style=\"color:black\">UNMC&rsquo;s addiction medicine fellowship gained full accreditation in February from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The fellowship is a partnership between the departments of family medicine, whose residency sponsors the fellowship, and psychiatry, whose department supplies faculty and clinical rotations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The fellowship started in 2019, and the third fellow in the program will begin in July. The fellowship is a one-year training for physicians who have completed an ACGME-approved residency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The accreditation will allow fellows who are trained in the program to become board certified in addiction medicine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The program focuses on prevention, evaluation, management and continuing care for patients of all ages with substance use disorders, or hazardous or risky use of substances, said Kenneth Zoucha, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and program director of the fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">It will train fellows to treat all substance use disorders and addictive behavior disorders from childhood to the geriatric population, Dr. Zoucha said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Fellows can come from all residency specialties, with most fellows being trained in family medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry, emergency medicine, OB\/GYN, pediatrics and preventive medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Dr. Zoucha thanked other community partners without which the fellowship would not be
