\u201cWhat makes good clinical research? In one word, empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

-Andre Kalil, MD,\u00a0UNMC Scientist Laureate<\/p>\n

You could say Andre Kalil, MD, is a perfectionist when it comes to his patients. He\u2019s not satisfied with the status quo. He\u2019s always asking himself whether there are better treatments or better diagnostics to help his patients.<\/p>\n

\n

Insights from Dr. Kalil<\/h3>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to clinical research you have to be empathetic and motivated, put your heart and soul into it and really invest yourself. In science, there\u2019s always room to learn, and we have to ask what else we can do to make it better. The moment that we are satisfied with what we have in science, we stop growing. And that\u2019s not good for science, and it\u2019s not good for humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve definitely made lots of progress in the last two years in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We have way more effective and safe tools than we did two years ago. We\u2019ve made progress, but it\u2019s not enough \u2014 we have to find more treatments and vaccines and go forth.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWe in our own fields of medicine could not defeat this virus alone. We realized we need each other more than ever. The multidisciplinary approach made a big difference. It\u2019s a lesson I hope will make us better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For 19 years\u00a0he\u2019s been a practicing physician and doing clinical research at UNMC. Dr. Kalil, who holds a master’s degree in public health, has studied many challenging infections, including transplant-related infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, sepsis, Ebola and COVID-19.<\/p>\n

His work has made a difference in saving the lives of patients worldwide and contributed\u00a0to the body of knowledge in the scientific world.<\/p>\n

Early in the pandemic with UNMC\u2019s recognized expertise and leadership in infectious diseases, Dr. Kalil enrolled the first patient in the very first double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial for COVID.<\/p>\n

In 59 days, the National Institutes of Health ACTT trial (Adaptive COVID Treatment Trial) showed an antiviral therapy was effective and safe for treating COVID in hospitalized patients. In 54 days, the second trial, ACTT-2, discovered another beneficial therapy, which acts in the immune system, to fight severe COVID.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese trials showed significant clinical benefit for our patients, but also for patients all over the planet,” Dr. Kalil said. “That\u2019s what makes clinical research so rewarding. This is to me really exciting\u00a0\u2014\u00a0there\u2019s no limits to make the outcome of our patients better.\u201d<\/p>\n

His love for clinical research started when he realized he could improve the care of his patients.<\/p>\n

\n

Kudos for Dr. Kalil<\/h3>\n

\u201cDr. Kalil\u2019s selection as the 2021 Scientist Laureate is a source of great pride to the College of Medicine. His longstanding commitment to research has positively impacted thousands of patients, and his work during the COVID-19 pandemic will likely prove to be among his most important contributions to the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.\u201d

\u201cNot only is Andre one of the smartest people I know, he is also a hard worker \u2013 and that is a combination that is tough to beat. Not only is he intelligent and creative, but he is willing to roll up his sleeves and do the heavy lifting to ensure a project is successful. In addition, Dr. Kalil has not lost sight of the whole reason for conducting clinical research \u2013 he really is driven by a desire to help people and to bring new and effective treatments to ill patients.\u201d

\u201cI saw clearly that the standard of care for our patients had limitations,\u201d Dr. Kalil said. \u201cAnything you do in medicine, there\u2019s always a limit \u2014 there\u2019s a point where we\u2019re doing everything we can, but we still have some patients who may not improve. I always ask myself \u2014 how can I help my patients beyond the standard of care? It really drives me in everything I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow you have to implement the new idea into practice and put together a design of the study \u2014 working with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, research coordinators, statisticians, ethicists\u00a0and others. I love it, and I think it\u2019s the beautiful thing about clinical research,\u00a0that there\u2019s so many people and disciplines involved in the same goal to enhance clinical care. You can\u2019t do it alone, and the project is going to be much better because people with different skills are collaborating.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that failure in clinical research also can lead to successful discoveries.<\/p>\n

\u201cClinical trials strictly monitor in real-time the safety and efficacy of drugs being evaluated in patients. If a drug fails to help or if it harms, the trial is stopped immediately, and that drug won\u2019t ever be given to anyone else. Without clinical trials, ineffective and unsafe drugs would continue being used for many years, and we would not have the proven effective and safe therapies we have today for life-threatening diseases, including serious infections, cancer\u00a0and heart diseases. The only way to know what works and is safe, and what does not work or is unsafe, is by doing the rigorous research.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClinical care truly benefits from clinical research in the same way individual health benefits from public health. Both are interdependent and complementary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
