Beginning in the summer of 2022, the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division students will have the opportunity to enroll in an elective summer externship for which they will be paid by the clinical facility. <\/p>\n

Working with nine clinical facilities in the region, Liane Connelly, PhD, assistant dean of the Northern Division, helped to create an externship that enables interested students to apply and be interviewed by the clinical facility. <\/p>\n

“Students enrolled in this unique program have the opportunity to work alongside future nurses in locations where they also aspire to work someday as a BSN RN,” Dr. Connelly said. “This benefits the students in gaining hands-on practical knowledge of nursing and the organization, and also benefits the organizations who are considering these students for future employment as a BSN, RN.” <\/p>\n

Clinical partners include Columbus Community Hospital, Faith Regional Health Services, Franciscan Medical Center, Providence Medical Center, Osmond Hospital, Pender Memorial Hospital, Antelope Medical Center, Boone County Medical Center and CHI Schuyler and Plainview.<\/p>\n

Upon hire, the students will enroll in the summer externship course and be supervised by a Northern Division faculty member for the duration of the summer externship. Once the externship ends, the students may continue work in a CNA capacity, with long-term opportunities for employment as a BSN\/RN after graduation and successful completion of the NCLEX-RN. <\/p>\n

At this time, eight of the Northern Division students in the second semester of the BSN program have applied for the new summer externship. Selections will be announced in late March.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
