{"id":73105,"date":"2022-03-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/03\/11\/unmc-for-the-record-march-11-2022\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:22:41","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:22:41","slug":"unmc-for-the-record-march-11-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/03\/11\/unmc-for-the-record-march-11-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC for the record, March 11, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><b>Dr. Davis reappointed to U.S. National Biodefense Safety Board<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dele Davies, MD, UNMC&#39;s senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies, has been reappointed by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a second three-year term on the National Biodefense Safety Board.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Davies currently cochairs its Readiness and Resilience Working Group.&nbsp;During his first term, he chaired recommendations to <a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/Shared%20Documents\/NBSB%20Files\/nbsb-dmwg-hcp-trng.pdf\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">improve and standardize national training and readiness for health care professions and public health responders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/Shared%20Documents\/NBSB%20Files\/strategic-improv-ndms-rpt-508.pdf\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">the NBSB Report on the Strategic Improvements to the National Medical Disaster Medical System (NDMS)<\/a>&nbsp;and co-chaired the <a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/AboutASPR\/WorkingwithASPR\/BoardsandCommittees\/Documents\/NBSB-Recommendations-for-NHSS-2023-26-508.pdf\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">Recommendations for the 2023-2026 National Health Security Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Davies said he is looking forward to continuing to support the country in this advisory role.<\/p>\n<p><b>Winners selected in UNeMed contest<\/b><\/p>\n<table align=\"right\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" style=\"width:250px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"picture disc.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/BackNapkin031122-scaled.jpg\" style=\"float:right\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>UNeMed&#39;s inaugural &quot;Back-o-the-Napkin Contest&quot; closed recently, and organizers selected&nbsp;three winning inventions that will receive further development guidance and prototyping.<\/p>\n<p>The &quot;Single Laser Measurement Device for Jump Testing&quot; was submitted by Michael Rosenthal, DSc, Elizabeth Wellsandt, DPT, and Michael Wellsandt, DPT.&nbsp;All three co-inventors are physical therapists in allied health. Their proposed device is a portable, single laser jump-testing device for repeatable, objective horizontal and vertical testing.<\/p>\n<p>The &quot;Beam Helmet&quot; was submitted by Elizabeth Beam, PhD, a registered nurse in the UNMC College of Nursing. She designed a personalized, protective helmet for doctors that could replace filtering face piece respirators and powered air-purifying respirators.<\/p>\n<p>The &quot;Wearable Pinch Ligation Device &#8211; Python&quot; was submitted by Quan Ly, MD, and Meghana Kashyap, MD, from the UNMC College of Medicine&#39;s Division of Surgery; and Larry Hart, a UNeTech prototyping fellow at Metropolitan Community College. Their invention is a wearable, electrosurgical ligation device to facilitate improved tissue sparing surgical procedures.<\/p>\n<p>UNeMed, the technology transfer and commercialization office for UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha, sponsored the contest in collaboration with the James and Karen Linder Maker Studio at UNMC&#39;s McGoogan Library, UNeTech Institute and UNO&#39;s Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship&nbsp;and Franchising.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\"D  lZ  lphvVlF zile m \">D  lZ  lphvVlF zile m
