{"id":73207,"date":"2022-03-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/03\/22\/student-focused-event-to-discuss-bias-in-health-care\/"},"modified":"2022-03-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T05:00:00","slug":"student-focused-event-to-discuss-bias-in-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/03\/22\/student-focused-event-to-discuss-bias-in-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Student-focused event to discuss bias in health care"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Unconscious racial bias and race-based medicine in health care can lead to inequity in health care delivery and negative consequences for patients.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The UNMC student community is invited to participate in an interprofessional student educational event titled &quot;Let&rsquo;s Talk About Bias in Health Care,&quot; on Wednesday, March 23, from noon to 1 p.m. Funded by a University of Nebraska Inclusive Excellence Development Grant, the event is designed to help interprofessional students identify and address bias in health care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Food will be available to the first 40 in-person student participants. Students will&nbsp;register online&nbsp;to receive their breakout room location and\/or a Zoom link for the event. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participants will view a video vignette depicting realistic interactions between health care professionals and patients, engage in facilitated discussion with faculty members and peers and hear from a health equity expert panel moderated by Jasmine Marcelin MD, and featuring Sheritta Strong, MD, assistant vice chancellor of inclusion at UNMC; Michael Griffin, community health programs manager in the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at UNMC; and Carolyn Green, director of health access at Girls Inc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The event was designed by College of Medicine graduating student Mckenzie Rowe&nbsp;and is sponsored by the UNMC Student
