{"id":73721,"date":"2022-05-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/05\/17\/covid-19-precautions-still-needed\/"},"modified":"2022-05-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-17T05:00:00","slug":"covid-19-precautions-still-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/05\/17\/covid-19-precautions-still-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 precautions still needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The UNMC Emerging Pathogens Laboratory has seen a sharp increase in the positivity rate for UNMC asymptomatic saliva PCR tests done on the med center campus.<\/p>\n<p>In late April, campus testing yielded a positivity <span style=\"color:black\">rate of 0.8%. That has <\/span>now, in early May, climbed to 9.2% and mirrors increased positivity rates seen across the state and country. It also is a stark reminder that COVID-19 continues to circulate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">&#8220;With the increase in cases, it&rsquo;s a good time to remember that everyone should screen using the 1-Check app each day before coming to campus,&#8221; said Jane Meza, PhD, <\/span><span style=\"color:black\">interim executive director for health security for UNMC<\/span><span style=\"color:black\">. &#8220;Booster vaccines also are available for those who are eligible and have not yet received a booster.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">UNMC faculty, staff and students are strongly e<\/span>ncouraged to make more use of the free saliva testing at Williams Science Hall and continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/10\/20\/1-check-unmc-now-available-for-android-and-apple-ios\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily using the 1-Check UNMC app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Created exclusively for the UNMC community, <span style=\"color:black\">the 1-Check app includes <\/span>campus-specific information on how individuals should proceed based on their COVID-19 screening response. It also is an effective tool to identify and monitor health trends and adjust campus guidance accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The general public is invited to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/05\/18\/covid-19-app-now-available-to-ios-and-android-users\/\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\">1-Check COVID app to self-screen<\/a>. Both apps are available to download to iOS and Android <span style=\"color:black\">phones at no charge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Testing also remains available on the Omaha campus for asymptomatic faculty, staff and students. Testing is offered Monday through Thursdays from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Williams Science Hall. N<span style=\"color:black\">o reservations are needed, but individuals should&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nulirt.nebraskamed.com\/testing\/register\/PXX00164\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register online prior to testing<\/a><span style=\"color:#575757\">. <\/span><span style=\"color:black\">Individuals who have previously registered for saliva testing do not need to re-register.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beyond testing and screening, UNMC experts remind individuals to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get vaccinated and boosted. Everyone 12 years and older can get their first booster five months after their first series of shots. Individuals who are immunosuppressed or over the age of 50 are encouraged to get an additional booster four months after their prior dose to further increase their protection. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Remain vigilant, especially in crowded indoor settings.<\/li>\n<li>Wear a mask, even if those around you have chosen not to do so.<\/li>\n<li>Stay home if you are having symptoms of COVID-19 or flu and call <span style=\"color:black\">Employee Health at 402-552-3563 or the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unmc.instructure.com\/courses\/6488\/pages\/student-health\" style=\"color:#0563c1; text-decoration:underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Health clinic<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"color:black\">serving your campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a
