{"id":73732,"date":"2022-05-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-20T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/05\/20\/mask-policy-tightens-as-covid-19-cases-rise\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:26:36","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:26:36","slug":"mask-policy-tightens-as-covid-19-cases-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/05\/20\/mask-policy-tightens-as-covid-19-cases-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Mask policy tightens as COVID-19 cases rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Effective Monday, May 23, masks must be worn in all areas on the UNMC campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">UNMC is updating its masking guidance due to a rise in COVID-19 transmission across the state and a sharp increase in the positivity rate for UNMC asymptomatic saliva PCR tests done on the med center campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">In late April, campus testing yielded a positivity&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color:black\">rate of 0.8%. By early May, that had climbed to 9.2%, and mirrors increased positivity rates seen across the state and country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">&#8220;The safety of our faculty, staff and students continues to be our north star,&#8221; said Jane Meza, PhD, <\/span><span style=\"color:black\">interim executive director for health security for UNMC<\/span><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">. &#8220;Based on current data, these steps are important to protect our mission-critical work.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Nebraska Medicine updated its mask guidance on May 20, noting an increase in both community transmission rates and employee absenteeism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Effective May 23:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Procedural masks (surgical, N95s, KN95s) are required for all UNMC students, staff, faculty and visitors in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type:disc\">\n<li>Public, common and patient-facing areas across all UNMC campuses. Public and common areas include but are not limited to: Clinics, hallways, elevators, atrium spaces, bathrooms, lounges, open areas in McGoogan Library and dining areas (except while eating); and<\/li>\n<li>Non-clinical, non-public areas, including classrooms, and shared office spaces, break rooms, cubicles and conference rooms.<\/li>\n<li>All research laboratories, instrument rooms and other support spaces unless they are the only one in that space. Some cores may require masks for all those in the core regardless of the number of users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Although masks are encouraged in all settings, they are not required when alone in an office or room with a closed door, in individual library study rooms, or when eating indoors or outdoors <\/span><\/p>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">For conference rooms and auditoria, individuals can unmask if the number in the room is 40% or less of the room capacity and all individuals are socially distanced. Socially distanced room capacities for some rooms are&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/services-resources\/room-scheduling\/available-rooms.html\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">available online<\/a><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Procedural masks are required in all areas of Nebraska Medicine, including patient-facing and public areas, as well as such nonclinical, nonpublic areas as office spaces, break rooms, cubicles and conference rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Masks are required for individuals who have an approved exemption to the vaccine policy. They also may be worn by individuals who are immunocompromised and\/or at higher risk of severe disease, as well as those who are more comfortable masking or choose to do so for any other reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<li><span style=\"color:#2a2a2a\">Campus administrators may provide additional restrictions for research specific activities and other unique spaces.<\/span><\/ul>\n<p>The campus community is strongly encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2020\/10\/20\/1-check-unmc-now-available-for-android-and-apple-ios\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"color:#0563c1\">self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily using the 1-Check UNMC app<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color:black\">and get <\/span><span style=\"color:black\">their vaccine <\/span>boosters as recommended by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html#recommendations\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">CDC<\/a><span style=\"color:blue\"><u>.<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">If you are having symptoms of COVID-19 or flu, stay home and call&nbsp;Employee Health at 402-552-3563 or the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unmc.instructure.com\/courses\/6488\/pages\/student-health\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\"><span style=\"color:#0563c1\">Student Health clinic<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"color:black\">serving your campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">As a reminder, the most up-to-date campus guidance regarding COVID-19 impacts on university operations can be found on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/coronavirus\/campus-guidance.html\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">UNMC Coronavirus Resources site<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>International Travel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">UNMC is returning to pre-COVID-19 operations for processing international travel requests for faculty, staff and students on university-sponsored business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Faculty and staff must submit a travel request in Concur prior to booking travel. Students should notify <\/span><a href=\"mailto:sepirtle@unmc.edu\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Education Abroad<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> of their intent to travel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">UNMC, as a part of the University of Nebraska system, adheres to the policy outlined in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.edu\/-\/media\/unca\/docs\/offices-and-policies\/policies\/executive-memorandum\/policy-on-university-sponsored-travel.pdf\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Executive Memorandum No. 25<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> and requires prior approval for international travel to higher risk locations (as identified by the CDC and U.S. Department of State travel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/notices\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">notices<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/traveladvisories.html\/\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">advisories<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">). Travelers will be notified after they submit their Concur travel request if their destination is considered higher risk and additional information is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">For any university-sponsored international travel, the following process takes place:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Faculty\/staff submits their travel request in Concur. Students notify <\/span><a href=\"mailto:sepirtle@unmc.edu\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">Education Abroad<\/a><span style=\"color:black\"> of their intent to travel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Following supervisor and financial approvals, the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) will conduct an initial risk assessment and will inform the traveler if their destination is considered higher risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Informed travelers submit an online travel petition to be reviewed by the UNMC International Travel Review Committee.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">After review, OGE will forward the petition to the Chancellor&rsquo;s Office with a &#8220;recommended&#8221; or &#8220;not recommended&#8221; classification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Chancellor approves or denies the petition and cleared travel will receive final approval through Concur.
