{"id":77999,"date":"2022-06-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/06\/13\/energy-curtailment-season-begins-at-med-center\/"},"modified":"2022-09-02T19:50:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-03T00:50:23","slug":"energy-curtailment-season-begins-at-med-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/06\/13\/energy-curtailment-season-begins-at-med-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy curtailment season begins at med center"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The UNMC community is familiar with &quot;energy curtailment,&quot; when colleagues and students are asked to help the campus by using less energy on days when the combined heat and humidity put extra stress on campus energy systems. Starting today, the med center will be in and out of curtailment throughout the summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">By using less energy on curtailment days, the med center:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">ensures continuity of essential systems for critical hospital and research functions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">reduces pollution;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">improves the health of the entire community; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">helps save money &#8212; both now (consumption) and for the next 12 months as the next year&rsquo;s electrical rate is based on UNMC and Nebraska Medicine&rsquo;s maximum usage at any given point in time. This is always important, but especially now, as budgets are tight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">So what simple things can be done to help?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Close shades, blinds and curtains whenever possible to reduce solar heat gain;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">When on campus and others aren&rsquo;t, please help by closing window coverings and turning off any lights or equipment not being used;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Lower lighting levels where possible, turn off lights in unoccupied areas and when leaving a room;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Turn off and unplug all electrical equipment not in use (computers, coffee makers, printers, chargers, etc.);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Shut fume hood sashes when not in use;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Open doors manually instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/button-pushers\/\"><span style=\"color:blue\">using the ADA buttons<\/span><\/a> if possible<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Take the stairs instead of the elevator; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:black\">Tell others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Updated technology has allowed the med center to control curtailment better. It is possible that workspaces will get warmer as the day goes on, but there shouldn&rsquo;t be any freezing spaces. For a full explanation, see the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/livegreennebraska.com\/sustainability-resources\/sustainability-at-work\/energy-curtailment\/\"><span style=\"color:#1155cc\">Energy Curtailment page<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Spaces are not controlled individually, the system cools larger areas.&nbsp;So while the med center has a temperature range to maintain, it&rsquo;s possible a colleague&rsquo;s individual space may not be the exact preferred temperature. Only call 402-552-3347 (Nebraska Medicine) or 402-559-4050 (UNMC) to report spaces colder than 66 degrees or warmer than 78 degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Patient care and research spaces are not affected by energy curtailment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Heat and humidity are impacting campus and human health;
