In the event of an accident, many people would be unprepared to help someone who is severely injured. <\/p>\n

Stop the Bleed is a national initiative that trains people to recognize life-threatening bleeding and intervene effectively by applying pressure, packing a wound or applying a tourniquet.<\/p>\n

Nebraska Medicine, UNMC and Clarkson College are hosting a free train-a-thon for all colleagues, students and contractors on Monday, Aug. 29, in lower Storz Pavilion at Nebraska Medical Center. Forty-five-minute sessions will be offered between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Registration is available here<\/a>. Attendees must complete a 30 minute online interactive course<\/a> and provide proof of completion prior to the in-person event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

A second training event will take place on Sept. 14 at the Truhlsen Events Center inside the Sorrell Center. More information and registration details will be shared at a future date.<\/p>\n

Each training session is open to colleagues across the med center.<\/p>\n

The training is a partnership between the Nebraska Medicine’s Trauma Program and the UNMC Healthcare and Emergency Responder Organization Education through Simulation (HEROES) program, with funding provided by the Nebraska Medicine Guild and NU Foundation.<\/p>\n

Colleagues who are eligible and interested in volunteering as trainers can fill out this interest form<\/a>, and those who are interested in volunteering in support roles, such as check-in or traffic control, can volunteer here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"Anyone can become an immediate responder and potentially make a difference between life and death for someone who is bleeding," said Austin Brake, program coordinator for the UNMC HEROES program. "Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death after injury in the world. Similar to the use of CPR or AED, improving public awareness about how to stop severe bleeding can be the difference between life and death for an injured person. More than 2 million people have already learned the essentials to control bleeding, and this number continues to grow."<\/p>\n
