{"id":92395,"date":"2022-10-13T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T19:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=92395"},"modified":"2025-12-18T10:48:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T16:48:36","slug":"coph-enrollment-highest-ever-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/10\/13\/coph-enrollment-highest-ever-in-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"COPH enrollment highest ever in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>While enrollment UNMC grew for the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> year in a row this fall, the UNMC College of Public Health was one of the areas that saw the greatest increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The college saw a 5% increase in enrollment, with a total of 393 students this fall \u2014 its most ever, drawing from 42 states and 21 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur students now represent a cross section of the whole United States and increasingly the world,\u201d said Dean Ali Khan, MD, MPH. \u201cThey are committed to improving the health of their communities and were attracted to the college\u2019s world-class teaching program and its focus on innovative solutions for our numerous global public health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A map of COPH student locations\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1-xdPDyDSXVpFocuMIdeBI1dTQb-Tqzc&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Khan pointed to an expanding interest in public health but also the excellent educational reputation of the college itself as two factors fueling the rise, as well as the recent rise in exposure of issues such as  COVID-19 and other areas that will require public health solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COPH student Kolawole Salami, MD, from Geneva, Switzerland, is pursuing his doctor of public Health with a concentration in epidemiology. He said the flexibility offered by UNMC\u2019s online programs was the perfect fit when he decided to continue his public health education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a public health physician, coordinating the research pillar of WHO response to emerging infectious diseases and high-threat pathogens with the potential to cause epidemics and pandemics, I realized I needed to improve my epidemiological skills to meet the critical demands of my work schedule,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe UNMC College of Public Health has an excellent reputation in epidemiology. The institution also has a group specializing in epidemic preparedness. This unique combination is a rarity in many public health schools, making the program particularly attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jess Cleghorn, from Minneapolis, is pursuing her master of public health in maternal and child health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleghorn learned about the college through the SOPHAS website, the college application service for public health students, and she said it was her top choice for grad school.
