Dr. Godfrey recognized for excellence in human genetics education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Society of Human Genetics has named Maurice Godfrey, PhD, as the 2022 recipient of the Arno Motulsky-Barton Childs Award<\/a> for Excellence in Human Genetics Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Godfrey is a graduate faculty fellow and professor at the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award, which includes a $10,000 prize, recognizes individuals for contributions of exceptional quality and importance to human genetics education internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his research, Dr. Godfrey has greatly contributed to the study of the a connective tissue disorder Marfan syndrome. His education work commenced in 2005 when he began leading a National Institutes of Health program to bring science to schools and communities on Native American reservations in Nebraska and South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Bierner elected to association board of directors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samuel Bierner, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was elected to the board of directors for the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) for a three-year term. The membership association is dedicated to the advancement of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal and electrodiagnostic medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peer mentors offer assistance to UNMC students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNMC Office of Academic Success is coordinating peer and academic wellness mentors to support UNMC students during the academic year. Peer Academic and Wellness (PAW) Mentoring<\/a> is an all-encompassing student success program that aides in multiple aspects of student life to foster success in academic, professional and personal wellbeing. Services offered include academic assistance, logistical resources, preparedness practice, support with belonging and wellness resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAW mentors host students of all cultural backgrounds and beliefs to ensure safe and equitable learning opportunities for all, enabling shared perspective, skills and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sessions are scheduled based on a mutual agreement between students and peer mentors. A current listing of PAW mentors<\/a> is available online. Students can schedule an appointment online<\/a> or email the UNMC Office of Academic Success<\/a> with questions. Sessions are currently offered online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Playhouse offering discount to ‘Christmas Carol’<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Omaha Community Playhouse is offering UNMC employees and students a discount to its upcoming show, “A Christmas Carol.” The traditional holiday favorite takes Ebenezer Scrooge and the audience on a life-changing journey to discover the true meaning of Christmas. It is filled with stunning Victorian costumes and festive music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
