There was nothing the late Stanley Truhlsen, MD, loved more than the UNMC community and his favorite frozen treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Friday, Nov. 11, faculty, staff and students are invited to the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute for free “Eye Scream” to celebrate Dr. Truhlsen\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free ice cream from eCreamery will be provided for all members of the UNMC\/Nebraska Medicine community who attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The celebration, hosted by Truhlsen Eye Institute and the University of Nebraska Foundation, will be held outside the Truhlsen Eye Institute and in the first-floor lobby. Tables and seating will be available inside. Share your ice cream photos on social media using #EyeScream.<\/p>\n\n\n

The late Dr. Truhlsen was nationally recognized in the field of ophthalmology. He graduated from UNMC in 1944 from a three-year class due to World War II. Dr. Truhlsen served as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsidering Dr. Truhlsen\u2019s service to his country, it\u2019s only fitting that his birthday be celebrated on Veteran\u2019s Day,\u201d said Matt Pohren of the University of Nebraska Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A community leader and philanthropist, Dr. Truhlsen helped position UNMC and Nebraska Medicine as national leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Volk, senior vice president and chief development officer at the University of Nebraska Foundation, worked with Dr. Truhlsen for over 20 years and said his generous spirit is his legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was the most welcoming, regular guy, with a sparkle in his eye and a ready smile,\u201d she said. \u201cHe wanted to make a difference in our community, and he wanted the Truhlsen Eye Institute to be a national leader in ophthalmic care and research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volk recalled visiting Dr. Truhlsen last year for his birthday. She said he beamed when they delivered him a quart of specialty ice cream labeled \u201cEye Scream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Truhlsen would be so glad that we\u2019re continuing to celebrate him and all he has meant to us,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re so fortunate to have had him in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronald Krueger, MD, director of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute at UNMC, said the event is a great way to commemorate him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven after Dr. Truhlsen\u2019s passing, we at the Truhlsen Eye Institute want to remember his birthday in a special way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
