{"id":93544,"date":"2022-11-16T15:24:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-16T21:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=93544"},"modified":"2022-12-08T10:42:03","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T16:42:03","slug":"two-nursing-faculty-mentor-and-mentee-receive-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/11\/16\/two-nursing-faculty-mentor-and-mentee-receive-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Two nursing faculty &#8211; mentor and mentee &#8211; receive awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Two UNMC College of Nursing faculty members received awards from the American Heart Association on Nov. 5 at the association\u2019s annual scientific sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bunny Pozehl, PhD, professor and Dorothy Hodges Olson Endowed Chair in Nursing, received the <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.heart.org\/en\/partners\/awards-and-lectures\/lectures\/kathleen-a-dracup-distinguished-lecture-and-exemplary-career-in-mentoring-award#:~:text=Purpose%20of%20the%20Award,in%20mentoring%20early%2Dcareer%20scientists.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kathleen A. Dracup Distinguished Lecture and Exemplary Career in Mentoring Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/AlonzoAwardsCON.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/AlonzoAwardsCON.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/AlonzoAwardsCON-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Pozehl, left, and Dr. Alonzo display their awards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Dr. Dracup was considered a pillar of excellence for her lifelong contributions to cardiovascular nursing and commitment to fostering the development of the next generation of scientists. The award recognizes a senior member of the association\u2019s Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing for their mentorship of early-career scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Pozehl is an adult\/acute care-certified nurse practitioner, whose research focuses on exercise training interventions and promoting adherence to exercise in heart failure. She has mentored and sponsored emerging scientists at the local, regional and national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Pozehl said receiving the award was an incredible honor that was only made possible by exceptional mentees. That includes her mentee and fellow AHA award winner, Windy Alonso, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a mentor you strive to promote your mentees, and the absolute best reward is to see their success and recognition,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Alonso, assistant professor in the UNMC College of Nursing-Omaha Division, received the <a href=\"https:\/\/professional.heart.org\/en\/partners\/awards-and-lectures\/early-career-awards\/marie-cowan-promising-early-career-investigator-award#:~:text=The%20winner%20will%20receive%3A,plaque%20at%20the%20council%20dinner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marie Cowan Promising Early Career Investigator Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Marie Cowan Award is given out each year to a junior investigator who demonstrates a spirit of innovation and scientific excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis award honors the legacy of a nursing research trailblazer,\u201d Dr. Alonso said. \u201cTo be recognized with this award is as humbling as it is motivating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Alonso is a heart failure nurse scientist and rural health advocate. Her research tests behavioral interventions to improve the lives of individuals with heart failure. Like her mentor, she supports students in the college of nursing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been told by many who knew Dr. Cowan that she was an incredible scientist, mentor and person,\u201d she said.&nbsp;
