{"id":93626,"date":"2022-11-18T08:12:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T14:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=93626"},"modified":"2022-11-29T16:23:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T22:23:12","slug":"dr-mikuls-featured-in-new-england-journal-of-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/11\/18\/dr-mikuls-featured-in-new-england-journal-of-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Mikuls featured in New England Journal of Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Ted Mikuls, MD, the Stokes-Shackelford Professor of Rhuematology in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, authored a review in the Nov. 17 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the country\u2019s most prestigious medical journal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mikuls\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMcp2203385\">11-page review, titled \u201cGout,\u201d<\/a> provides a framework for understanding the health care burden posed by gout, as well as its diagnosis and management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cGout manifests as painful, debilitating arthritis,\u201d Dr. Mikuls writes. \u201cTreatments are effective but often not prescribed properly. Management involves both treatment for flares and ongoing medication to lower urate levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a rheumatologist and epidemiologist, Dr. Mikuls has had a long-term interest in gout. He said it was humbling to be asked to write the review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe New England Journal of Medicine provides a major platform for cutting-edge research and reviews, so it&#8217;s an honor to be considered for this effort,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis worldwide, but its effects on patients are continuing to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGout is often thought of as a non-serious and self-inflicted condition by both patients and providers,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope this review begins to dispel these misconceptions and ultimately moves the needle in terms of patients with gout receiving high-quality care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mikuls credited his colleagues from UNMC and the Omaha VA for their support for the article. \u201cIt takes a team to do research and I am surrounded by a fantastic team that makes invitations like this possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, offered Dr. Mikuls his congratulations on his \u201ccomprehensive, well-written\u201d piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt greatly enhanced my understanding of the current status of pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this common problem,\u201d Dr. Britigan said. \u201cTo have this work appear in perhaps the most prestigious medical journal in the world is a testament to the high regard that Dr. Mikuls is held in this research area, and it adds to the growing recognition of the outstanding quality of the faulty at UNMC.\u201d<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\"
