Jeremy Payne, MD, resident in the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology, received a Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Resident Scholar Award for his presentation at the 2022 American Society of Anesthesiology\u2019s (ASA) annual meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He presented his research poster, \u201cPrevalence and Characteristics of Inappropriate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation at an Academic Midwest Medical Center,\u201d at the meeting in New Orleans. He received the award prior to the event, on the strength of his abstract and a nomination by departmental leaders, using the scholarship to travel to the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although being a resident is more than a full-time job, Dr. Payne has several reasons why he felt research work is important to his development as a medical professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResearch lays the foundation for the clinical principles we learn in medical school and residency,\u201d he said. \u201cUnderstanding how studies apply in different clinical situations can allow us to give our patients the best outcome possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlso, participating in research advances the field and improves our understanding of basic science and\/or clinical practice. It allows us to satisfy intellectual curiosities and answer interesting questions, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Payne said that in the future, he hopes to use data gathered through research and other avenues to make hospitals more efficient and cost-effective, enhance patient safety and increase employee satisfaction.<\/p>\n
