{"id":93880,"date":"2022-11-30T15:46:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T21:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=93880"},"modified":"2022-11-30T15:53:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T21:53:59","slug":"dr-swindells-co-edits-id-journal-supplement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/11\/30\/dr-swindells-co-edits-id-journal-supplement\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Swindells co-edits ID journal supplement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>Susan Swindells, MBBS, is one of three co-editors of a new supplement to the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, a major ID journal and the official journal of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supplement, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/issue\/75\/Supplement_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now published online<\/a>, focuses on long-acting and extended release drug development for the treatment of infectious diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis and other diseases. The hard-copy release is scheduled for Dec. 1, World AIDS Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-acting drug development is a longtime interest for Dr. Swindells, who has led clinical trials on long-acting HIV drugs and currently is part of a project working on developing long-acting drugs for tuberculosis, malaria and hepatitis C. A growing number of patients at the specialty care HIV clinic are now getting anti-HIV treatment by long-acting injections every month or even every other month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an interest in general in the field of long-acting drug development,\u201d she said, pointing to diverse specialties such as oncology, psychiatry and gynecology that are exploring or using long-acting and extended-release formulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the supplement, Dr. Swindells and her co-editors reached out to experts across the world to provide \u201ca comprehensive look at the long-acting landscape: what\u2019s out there, what\u2019s coming, what are the barriers, what are the potential advantages? Just looking at the big picture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the articles include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article-abstract\/75\/Supplement_4\/S487\/6835718?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What clinicians need to know about the development of long-acting formulations<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/75\/Supplement_4\/S498\/6835714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long-acting formulations for the prevention and treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection: Strategic leveraging and integration of multidisciplinary knowledge to advance public health<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article-abstract\/75\/Supplement_4\/S490\/6835722?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A holistic review of the preclinical landscape for long-acting, anti-infective drugs using HIV as a paradigm<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Swindells herself collaborated on the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article-abstract\/75\/Supplement_4\/S487\/6835718?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduction<\/a> to the journal and a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article-abstract\/75\/Supplement_4\/S510\/6835720?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piece on tuberculosis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a field with a lot of activity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supplement also explores new technology in the long-acting arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost people think of this as an injection,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s other technology now, such as an implant for contraception, and there\u2019s interest in using a microarray patch \u2013 like a fancy version of a nicotine patch \u2013 that would release a drug over a long period of time and could be used for children and babies. Or even grownups \u2013 no one really likes an injection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emerging field is especially of interest to ID, she said, where medication adherence is vitally important \u2013 and where some patients may face stigma or judgment for their conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cForgetting to take medicine is a common thing,\u201d Dr. Swindells said. \u201cBut infectious diseases are not forgiving. If you have HIV medication you\u2019re supposed to take every day and you take it three-quarters of the time, you run the risk of your infection getting resistant. There are more bad consequences for missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd some of these diseases are heavily stigmatized, so patients getting their treatment by long-acting injections like the fact that no one is going to see them taking a daily pill. Also, they don\u2019t have to be reminded every day that they have this disease. It can be freeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With some young people, you could be looking at years of having to take a pill every day, and that\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supplement is supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/longactinghiv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long-Acting\/Extended Release Antiretroviral Research Resource Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Swindells, who currently is focused full-time on research, called the supplement a nice project toward the end of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt UNMC, we\u2019ve done a lot of the big clinical trials that have led to the approval of the long-acting medicines we\u2019re now using,\u201d she said, pointing to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2019\/03\/18\/unmc-study-featured-in-new-england-journal-of-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 New England Journal of Medicine
