{"id":94803,"date":"2023-01-03T01:56:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-03T07:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=94803"},"modified":"2022-12-30T09:16:13","modified_gmt":"2022-12-30T15:16:13","slug":"geriatrics-consult-service-boosts-quality-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/01\/03\/geriatrics-consult-service-boosts-quality-of-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Geriatrics consult service boosts quality of life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><em>This story appeared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/_documents\/about\/imbiennialreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Internal Medicine Department\u2019s 2022 Biennial Report<\/a>, which was published earlier this year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When aging adults are admitted to the hospital, they face a high-risk time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many older patients are living with chronic health and cognitive issues, in addition to the acute illness that brought them into the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitalization is a time of care transitions, sometimes from independent community living to an institutional setting. Research shows such patients are at high risk of poor outcomes, said Jessie Jenkins, MD, assistant professor in UNMC\u2019s geriatrics and hospital medicine divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation calls for increased support for those patients \u2014 and the med center has a program to rally that care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the UNMC Division of Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Medicine, the med center offers inpatient consults by board certified geriatricians. Formed 1\u00bd years ago, the consult service helps address the shortage of geriatricians in relation to the aging population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the program, five physicians rotate on the service Mondays through Fridays year-round. Dr. Jenkins is on the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented with a case, the consulting physicians are faced with understanding the context of what brought the patients to the hospital. Then their task: how to improve the patient\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Jenkins said the service applies a philosophy around the four M\u2019s of geriatrics: Mind, medication, mobility and \u201cmatters most.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consulting physicians will try to make sense of the complex interplay among such difficult issues as dementia, pill burden and falls. The concept behind \u201cmatters most\u201d puts the patient\u2019s highest priority front and center in considering how to respond to the other three areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The syndromes facing geriatric patients are frequently influenced by multiple factors, Dr. Jenkins said, so the physicians\u2019 recommendations are always multi-faceted and specific to the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Dr. Jenkins, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever gotten a consult where I don\u2019t think that I\u2019ve made a significant improvement in the patient\u2019s quality of life when all is said and
