{"id":95499,"date":"2023-01-23T17:27:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T23:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=95499"},"modified":"2023-01-23T17:37:59","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T23:37:59","slug":"registration-open-for-cancer-symposium-grant-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/01\/23\/registration-open-for-cancer-symposium-grant-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Registration open for cancer symposium, grant workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p>The Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will host a cancer prevention and control symposium and grant writing workshop on Feb. 17 at the Truhlsen Campus Events Center in the Sorrell Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be a two-part, in-person event with food provided and free registration. All UNMC students and faculty and Nebraska Medicine clinicians interested in cancer prevention and control are invited to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The morning symposium will begin at 8 a.m. It is designed to highlight existing research programs and potential for growth across the cancer prevention and control continuum, as well as to help move attendees\u2019 research programs forward by cultivating connections among those with like interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Raymond Bergan, deputy director of the Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, will welcome participants, followed by keynote speaker presentations, a panel discussion and a poster session. Attendees are strongly encouraged to submit a poster to share their research with the community. Breakfast and lunch will be served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Featured symposium keynote speakers will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kelsey Klute, MD, associate professor, UNMC Internal Medicine\u2014Oncology and Hematology, will highlight how the analysis of advanced pancreatic cancer patients created the ability to define a high-risk cohort and drove the creation of a one-of-a-kind prevention clinic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ronnie Horner, PhD, professor and chair, UNMC Department of Health Services Research and Administration, will discuss how mHealth technology can be used to reach across the state to track and treat symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Edward Peters, DMD, professor and chair, UNMC Department of Epidemiology, will examine cutting-edge advances in cancer epidemiology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apar Ganti, MD, professor, UNMC Internal Medicine\u2014Oncology and Hematology, and associate director for clinical research, Fred &amp; Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, will review how the focus has shifted from treating metastatic lung cancer to identifying early disease, saving lives in the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The afternoon grant writing workshop will begin at 1:30 p.m. It is intended to review basic elements of grant-funded research projects along with key drivers of proposal scoring, with a thematic focus on how to write fundable grant applications, particularly in the cancer prevention and control space.
